| ANyone have one ? I cant put a 1.4x on my 80-200 f2.8 apparently so I was thinking on trying to find a 300 F4 since a 300 2,8 is unreal .

| I have a 300mm f4. it's the early version not the current AFS version. I can't speak highly enough of it. I use it with the Kenko Pro 1.4 converter with great success. I have it on a D2x body. My brother uses the AFS version on a D300 with Nikon converter and he can't brag enough about the combination either. It's one lense I don't think you can go wrong owning AND above all using.

| And Iain, I have used one myself, Jeff uses one too with both a 1.7 and a 1.4 TC, see the Tern thread. The F4 is a good combination of weight and quality. My 2.8 can weigh heavy after a few hours, but the 2.8 is worth it in my opinion. Cost wise my 2.8 is MF, as are most of my good lenses. I do't do AF due to the cost. Frankly I don't think it makes that much difference to the keeper rate and it keeps me on my toes! Most of my subjects are static.

| The later AF-S model is good with fast focus and it takes either the kenko 1.4 tc or the Nikon one well with little or no loss of IQ. It will work with the 1.7 tc but the focus slows a bit

I have a Kenko DG300 Pro x2 and it works on my Nikon 80-200 f2.8 AF (old style trombone zoom) and my 80-200 f2.8 AFS and the 70-200mm f2.8 AFS VR. The same combos should be possible with the other Nikon 80-200 AFD or AF (two ring version). BTW: Dont ask why do I have three lenses that are nearly identical apart from AF speed!!

| I have a 300f4 AFS and find it an excellent lens. A perfect compromise of lightweight and reasonable fstop at a decent price. Of course, stating the obvious, having a prime lens can sometimes be restrictive if your subject comes too close. I was photographing bears two weeks ago with the lens on a D7000 (ie 450mm equivalent). One bear came so close I couldn't get it's head in full frame. By the time I had changed to the 80-200mm it had moved further away! Grrrrrr!

And I too have an old 300 f4 AF Nikkor, and I found it to be great, like the 80-200 it being an AF didn't give me any real options for using TC's on it. I did use my Nikkor TC14B on it with great success. I got tack sharp images from the 300 f4/TC14B combination even shot wide open.. It spends most of it's time in the vault these days, but i have fond memories of using it!! :thumbsup:

| i use the 300mm f4 afs almost all the time ,i use it with the 1.7tc and find its still more than fast enough for birds in flight ,its not so much focussing time as learning to acquire target that counts ,its also a good combo for close focus pseudo-macro work .the only thing really lacking is v.r so attention to shutter speeds is needed. the lens matched with various t.c.s gives lens alone 300mm,with 1.4tc 420mm and with 1.7tc 500mm .so quiet variable and also lightweight .

| adding to this ,when i bought the d300 the seller had a nikon2xtc mk3 ,we bolted it on to the 300mm-f4 and it a/f with no problem on the d300s .so a good option if you have this combo
