This is pretty scary. I do think that Nikon as been tripping more than skipping for the last 2 years. No doubt that Nikon still makes the highest quality SLR cameras and lenses, but they seem to have wasted a lot of efforts in other markets. Since the Coolpix 5000, it seems to me that Canon, Sony, and lots of others have kicked their butts in the P&S bracket. In the mirrorless category, they seem completely adrift and hopeless. They seem to consistently be last to market with any new ideas...

What will become of them? Hard to say. But they'd better do something.

From where I sit, it's time to restructure and recalibrate. Either sit back like Leica and be a niche play in the very high end or clean out the whole design group and marketing departments in the other areas and get some young outrageous designers and marketers and start kicking butts again.

This is the company that brought us the S series rangefinders, the NIKON F for god's sake!!!, the D1 ( an impossible project a full 3 years before anyone else)...on the low end, the coolpix 950, the coolpix 5000, the first EVF was in the coolpix line.

I just pray the failures in the other areas don't kill the high end part of the company...

I tend to look at these reports and say ... So what. Most of the expectations are driven by analysts who hype or overexpect.

There was another report yesterday that oil prices were down due to the recent agreement with Iran that they would fall in line with Western expectations for their nuclear program. This has NOTHING to do with oil. Yes there may be more sanctions on Iran if there had been no agreement but the agreement is not yet in force so how can this effect oil prices as there has been no change in oil supply!!! Over-egged response to current events. This is not cause and effect but rumour and bluster.

Its hard not to draw the conclusion that Nikon havent got their future market mapped out correctly.

Everyone has a smartphone that now takes photos comparable with a D1...maybe even models that WE only a short period ago, regarded as serious photographic tools.

The report, I recently linked, about modern image quality requirements changing, rings a few alarm bells.

Although we DSLR diehards may be keeping the Nikons afloat for the moment, in a few years there wont be sufficient dedicated followers.

Just watching a tv report about the state of UK high street shops and the government are surprised? Duh. We've known for years that Internet shopping would do this...why is it such a surprise? Why does it need a special committee to investigate it?

The same is happening with photography. The serious amateur market will start to contract significantly in the not too distant future.

Sad but true.

I think that the serious amateur market will change significantly in the next 5 years. Unfortunately we are at another crossover point like between film and digital. This new crossover is at the DSLR to EVF crossover.
This will result in the ability to have fully functional cameras with functionality similar to the Fuji XE1/2 cameras but with a third of the weight of the DSLR.

This new crossover is for the DSLR with mirror and pentaprism/Optical Viewfinder into the Electronic ViewFinder (EVF) which will provide us with better functionality once the EVF displays become as good as the OVFs.
This will result in the ability to have fully functional DSLR cameras with functionality similar to the Fuji XE1/2 cameras but with a third of the weight of the DSLR and no mirror to clack up and down or huge pentaprism bump.

Maybe even more radical...with only pros and serious amateurs wanting a 'camera shaped' camera and supplimentary lenses.

Everyone else will just have phone/ tablet cameras.

Logically the average person doesnt need/want anything more than a small device that gives 28-100mm (FF equivalent) so that is fairly easy to provide.
Then for the more serious user there is the camera shaped thingy with interchangeable lenses.

Looks like it's time to buy Nikon stock. They are profitable and the yen is low.

The analysts may be worthless, but the decrease in stock value weakens the company. They have less access to borrowing and become more susceptible to a take-over...imagine the disaster if Casio or Samsung were to buy Nikon!!!

I just saw on the news here that the police stopped a driver and ticketed him for using the google glasses while driving.

Very true Tom. Not sure what the solution is but Nikon doesn't seem to listen to the customer very well or not as well as Fuji does. How long has this group been screaming for a D400? I live in Williamsburg, Va and it is a tourist haven. When I wonder down to the historic area, I always look at what folks are using to take photos. Phone cameras and P&S are the majority. Very very few entry level DSLR's and a few die hard folks with pro level gear. In the summer, I see most of the folks dragging around the pro level gear sitting on benches in the 94 degree heat with 98 percent humidity.

But then again, I am just looking at this from what I see in the US.

Gary, they need to follow the locals to the Fuji store for a nice XE1/2.

I just got myself the 14mm f2.8 as I needed a wider lens than 18mm. The 10-24mm from Fuji wont be out until February which is when I am in Hong Kong.

Well done Jonathan. Everyone seems to find the 14mm lens a real winner. What timing! In Hong Kong to get the 10-24mm. You should be able to get some good use out of the 10-24mm while in Hong Kong - looking forward to your photos.

I have the two zooms and the 23mm and could not be happier. I find my self in constant possession of the X20 when out of the house. Life is good in Fuji land.

Need to get used to the 14mm so I can use it in HK. If I see the 10-24 in the shops in HK I will probably succumb! :-)

Post home, the box, and its inner packaging stuff, to avoid any potential Customs challenge that it's new!
;-)

Some lenses I've ordered from outside Canada come in with no charges while others don't. Partly depends on how the seller fills out the customs forms (wink).

I think Nikon have priced themselves out of much of the market. We are in a recession, globally, still in reality.

For most people, photography is a hobby. It is not an essential purchase.

I'd love a df but even if I had the money (laughs heartedly) I wouldn't spend that sort of money.

I think with those prices in Canada it would be worth a trip to Toronto to see my friends there and also go to Henry's. Too cold to go to Canada this side of April.
