I've not been posting much lately - I have taken up a new activity (building to a charity event) that I have never done before - once it's over I never will again either! Attachment: Event Flyer.pdf (Downloaded 17 times)

P.S. I took some of the photos in the event flyer - but did not do the photoshop or design work. Made sure they had a nice white background to cut out against and the fringing is dreadful.

I think that they need to learn how to 'feather'.

Since CS5 there is a refine edge button that just takes care of this for you. If they are using up to date software they are either unbelievably lazy or very uninformed.

I think I would go for the latter option Rich. The feathering option has been available for a long time on a selection and as you say the Refine option is there to make it even easier.

richw wrote: Even with out the new functions you can defringe by simply loading the transparency mask, contracting it by 1 or 2 pixels, reversing the mask and deleting. I've had an action that does this in milliseconds...since Layers began. I've had a (work) project on going since Christmas. One of my clients 'bought a camera' and decided to shoot their own furniture against a white wall. Nothing wrong with that until they realise not all the wall is pure white (they didnt light the wall!) and using a magic wand ....isnt magic! So when they asked me to put their furniture in 'settings' (cos its winter over here and the gardens are naff) it presented a few challenges to say the least. Trying to match the shooting angles of two differnet images (product + background)...not to mention the studio and outdoor lighting ...and reflections! I dont usually show any work on here but ... Hmmm... I didn't know about defringing. Must look into it. Those pics look pretty convincing, Eric. Clients must be pleased.

Eric wrote:So are you into boxing yourself Rich? Yes - unfortunately! I went away over Easter and lost a bit of ground. Sparring has been very hard since I got back. Whatever our relevant shapes the overall fitness of the group is pretty good. I'm the least fit of the group I can run rings around most regular gym goers in their forties at the minute. Boxing is much more demanding than I ever realised.

Judith wrote:Hmmm... I didn't know about defringing. Must look into it. They are certainly relieved to have been gotten out of hole... £150k sales plan was in jeopardy. They haven't received my bill yet....I did over 50! Defringing is a softening of the surface edges. Applied once with enough pixel width selection it can remove white cutout remnants. But it's not foolproof. I've never used the refine edge feature in CS 5/6 it may be better. But as an old dog I still use my tried and tested actions. It may be no better than the new techniques but I can do it without thinking at the press of an assigned function button. When you have 50 intricate cutouts to do every shortcut helps.

Eric's photoshop work is truly excellent. Those images are so well re-constructed that they are worth whatever he charges his customer.

Well done Rich! Enjoyed the video. I thought you had him! Have to ask though, where was your camera? Thought you got that Sony 100 for quick shots?
