Worth a look, you can get a trial version, and it's now available for PC as well as Mac.

I have the iPad version which works great with the Apple Pencil

I did download the trial for the desktop but it doesn't have the catalog facility of Lightroom. If they added that I would definitely ditch adobe

Yes it is very good.
I am testing as a long term alternative to Photoshop and Lightroom.
Also worth taking a look at ON1 PhotoRAW and Luminar if you are on this path.

Have been looking at it but it's not the 'one stop shop' which Lightroom is becoming.

Initially I only used the DAM aspects of Lr, but as it has matured I am finding I need to visit Photoshop less and less. Providing levels as it now does for the vast majority of images I can do everything I need in Lr. I much prefer the subscription model.

I can see it might have some nice features but it doesn't appear to address the DAM aspect of digital photography which to me is the first box which needs ticking. I don't want a plethora of image processing software to which I turn to one or another programs for specific tasks. It appears to cater for editing and presumably creating 360ยบ panoramas, that would be useful I have seriously intended to get PTgui, in the near future because I want to try creating 360 panoramas, they seem fun and a 'different' way of making photographs by adding that third dimension, movement.

I may download Affinity but a month trial isn't enough for me, I am so busy that a month can go by and I don't have time to take, let alone process photographs. No way am I going to fork out 50 quid just to try it out. That's where the subscription model comes in. I wish all software was available on subscription. :hardhat:

JK, since you say you are testing it, could you post your comments and finding here please? That would be very helpful! :thumbs:

Robert, Go get a trial copy of the new software from ON1 called PhotoRAW 2018 when it comes out in late October/early November.

It is everything LR is and will have Layers......... yeah finally someone has listened. This means that you will have an easy to use software with good catalog and fast RAW editing and layers along with HDR etc....

Hint for testing these softwares. Never shoot a new set of images always use a set that you have processed through at least one other software you like and use the same images and see how they come out.

Thinking back, in fact I have done that, although not in the way you suggest, I tried processing the same (fresh) InfraRed images with Lr, Ps and Bibble. Bibble won, for me anyway! Mainly because it made easier and a better job of adjusting the subtle light tones. I also find the 'zone' selection provided by the Nik filters to greatly ease selection for fine adjustments limited to very specific parts of images. Here it's the ease and flexibility of selection, rather than any special feature of the adjustment of the selected parts of the image, if that makes any sense!

Well I finally did it. After 20+ years of Photoshop I've ditched Adobe by cancelling my subscription at renewal and bought Affinity for my mac instead.

I will miss keywordd only when I search for things but my folder naming should be sufficient. I may change my file naming procedures slightly in 2018 to compensate further. Don't like to change this close to a year end for consistency.

Well done Jan.
Every person who moves away from Adobe makes the case stronger for the removal of compulsorary subscription only policy they operate.
I still use PS CS6 (for big edits) and LR v6.13 (for DAM) but I also have Capture One Pro which is a good blend of both the Adobe softwares and it does a great job.


BTW I think you can still use LR for catalogs but you need to check the details.

I guess its the fact I have used PS for the past 20+ years and still use it for the work that I still do.

So the thought of changing and learning a new software and work flow, weather it will do what I need,

I could use it for the wildlife but the Rugby still needs PS as those that I supply have there systems set up for it.

I now have an alternative (COP V11) and use the old faithful (PC CS6) as well as the new pretender.

I have to say that after a couple of days processing two shoots (from Raw) with Affinity it is a good replacement for Photoshop but it doesn't replace Lightroom in any way. It is very difficult to accurately assess images without opening each one individually as it has no catalogue feature. I have downloaded Bridge, which is free, but it feels like too much of a compromise and increase in workflow.

I also find Affinity is very power hungry on the computing front and this means I have to wait for transitions to take place more than I did with Lightroom.

It has slowed my workflow down, and sometimes I am not noticing things until well into the edit which I would have seen immediately and corrected (like minor lens distortions). It probably doesn't help that I have just moved to the D800 and am dealing with bigger files with more definition.

I have now downloaded a trial of On1 Photo Raw 2018 for 30 days to see if this is better suited. I still like Affinity on the iPad, and I can see uses for it, but more for photoshop than lightroom type edits. I, as an 'right in-camera' type shooter don't really use photoshop that much, it was Lightroom that I used most so I feel there is more work to be done.

I use this as well and I like it but what I dont like is having the different presets being offering and so in your face!

Even allowing for the forum software the On1 image has far more detail and tonal range in the rocks and the sky. This seems in line with what I have read elsewhere.

Can Affinity access NIK filters? That might be a way of maximising your image potential. For images such as the above the NIK filter suit is ideal as can wring the last vestige of detail and tonal range from the image without making it look like you have. Also the affected area selection method in NIK filters is so easy and controllable.

What about Capture One?

I have now purchased On1. The trial was very promising, doing everything I wanted and used in Lightroom, and then they sent me a special holidays offer which was a significant reduction on the usual prices with a number of extras. My defection from Adobe is complete :thumbs:

Well done Jan, hope it's good long term.

If we don't try these things we will never learn or advance ourselves.

However, for now at least I am sticking with the Adobe Lightroom - Photoshop combo. I can't garner the effort needed to learn yet more software tricks and routines.

I am very happy with Lightroom, Photoshop is there when I need it for the occasional more sophisticated editing.

I am also currently wrestling with star stacking software, various panorama software and even focus stacking software, that is challenge enough without contemplating changing my foundation software as well.

Lightroom is not just my standard image processor, it's the foundation of my image file system. Currently around 35,000 images. It works very well, I can locate pretty well any image I need in a short time. I still have many negatives and slides to digitise, hopefully over the winter I will get back into that and add to my digital library of photographs to enjoy.

Well done Jan.
COP is streets better than LR as a RAW processor and image editor but LR has a better catalog and other twizzles Maps, Web, Books, Slideshow, etc that are very useful.

I recommend this book. Comes as book or ebook.
