Ian thanks for the info. I got into my Sony after a slight P/W problem and the update faltered then I removed the x1.4 extender and all good. Lens now on Version 03.

Having bought myself a super duper 2024 spec MacBook, I now discover the Sony firmware isn’t new enough to support the latest OS, so it won’t allow firmware updates without disabling half of its security defaults and faffing about rebooting and installing additional software. You couldn’t make it up! Even my old laptop cannot now be used as it’s still got windows 8 and that’s been dropped off Sony’s software compatibility list. Sigh! My only recourse is to borrow a mates laptop with windows 10. Incidentally, having trawled the Sony site I notice it’s not just the 200-600 lens that’s got firmware updates. I’ve got 2 other lenses that ‘need’ doing at the same time. I say ‘need’ but I do wonder whether these updates add anything to the functionality of MY set up. A lot of the changes relate solely to new camera compatibility. Can’t wait till Wednesday.

Does Apple support multiple operating system versions? My PC has Windoze 10 and Linux loaded, I just choose which OS to use on boot up. If so you could load an earlier MacOS as an alternative Edited to add - Using Apple's Boot Camp utility, you can set up a Mac so that it boots to Mac OS X, Windows or Linux.

It’s ludicrous that something you’ve paid a lot of money for to get the best available and you have to compromise it on something simple like this. I will no doubt in time do what you suggest but at the moment it’s still in the honeymoon period and I don’t want to be fighting the computer, I want to get on using it for imaging and videoing. CORRECTION: The M3 chip doesn’t support Boot Camp. Apple decided not to pursue it with the M series chips. So I’ve had my chips!

CORRECTION 2: Apparently Parallels is the software that has replaced Boot Camp on newer machines. My computer guru, who currently works in Belgium sorting out the EU wide 5G network, is back home soon and will ‘sort me out’. Oh ‘eck! I sometimes understand Dr Who’s dialogue more than his.

If you hold down the Ctrl key and click Open from the menus then the software will warn you that security may be compromised by running the software. Usually this is just Apple being ultra-cautious and running the software will have no problem.

Answer to all your woes is stay away from Apple products - they want to control you and rip you off with built in redundancy! Like Tesla who sell you a car and then tell you what you can do with it.....

All 3 lenses done….good old Windows 10. It appears my Mac issue was the Sony step by step guide….which was for previous generation Macs to my Sonama machine. It explains why I was getting different messages and pop ups …..but it doesn’t excuse Apple for changing something as basic as a software update routine.

Iain wrote:When I looked at the update on the Sony web site it give you the instructions for intel and M Macs.Yes but they don’t mirror what actually appears on the screen of my M3. It may be me not understanding the Mac architecture but if the message isn’t the same as the step guide….I freeze. Lol I will no doubt be more confident for the next update.

LolOnce you get used to the Mac way of doing things it will do the next one fine. I was lucky in that I only had the 200-600 to do as the rest were up to date. Now I'm waiting for the spring firmware update for the A1 if it arrives.

They can’t make the glass better and I would be surprised if the speed & accuracy of focus could be any better. It seemed to me this was primarily just including new camera bodies to the lens compatibility. A camera update could be more significant. Although I should say I haven’t noticed any deficiency in the A1’s functionality as it is.

Perhaps it is an update for the all-new Sony A9iii? For those who think they need to spend another £6000?

Well I wont be moving anytime soon. This DPR review confirms that staying with my Fuji APS-C and Nikon FF is the best result. https://www.dpreview.com/articles/6717086661/sony-a9-iii-image-quality-dynamic-range-analysis The Z9 and ZF with my Z7 suit me so well for landscapes. The Fuji stuff is great for less critical work such as portraits and general shooting.

I thought it wasn’t a good idea when Sony brought out the A9 iii. I have never had a problem getting the pic I need doing sports for a living going from 3fps up. To me having 120fps is just taking the skill out of the equation, just press the shutter and hope you got the shot you want. A foot in contact with a rugby ball for a conversation, done that with 10fps, a tennis ball on the racquet, done that as well plus more. Rant over.
