As I mentioned in another thread, I visited my friend in Barrow who eBays Nikon cameras this afternoon.

What a lovely afternoon, we had a good chat and his wife had prepared a great spread of nibbles and seasonal treats.

Then we went into his den leaving the boys playing on the games console...

I have handled a really clean D100, several D200's, a D300 which is in nice condition, a very clean D700, a couple of D3's and looked at various film cameras like F6's.

He has a clean but faulty 28-70 f2.8 AFS lens which apparently hunts uncontrollably in AF mode. Works perfectly in Manual, tempting... I seem to remember Eric mentioning it's a very good lens for IR? I could live with MF for that.

He also showed me a current pride and joy, a Nikon spotting scope, 82mm?, like the one Graham mentioned recently complete with a 60, 40, 20? zoom eyepiece AND a camera mount. Absolutely superb optics, beautiful to handle. Perfect for anyone interested in birding, I would say.

As for 80-200 AFS zooms he has 3, or 4? two as new, mint condition. Just fondling these was a real pleasure.

Sadly he doesn't have any manual lenses at present, nor any EL lenses.

I did come away with a nice present:

We all had a wonderful time and stuffed with food.

Robert....your memory of my 28-70 assessment is better than mine.

I don't remember testing it. That's not saying I didn't ....can't recall it.

I do recall the 24-70 is absolutely awful for IR. Suspect using the coffee cup would be a definite improvement.

Maybe its overshadowed my 28-70 recollections?
o.O

Which lens is your 'IR' lens now then?

17-35 AFS f2.8 ....which on DX is 25-52

Incidentally ...the 80-200 AFS f2.8 is good for IR, and as the 28-70 is from the same time period, it may well be ok.

Have you tried the 18-105 on IR? I thought it was ok but struggled to focus at 18mm.

Perhaps I need to play with it, The only body I have converted to IR is the D1, I would have liked to have transplanted the D1 filter over to a D200 body but it's too small.

I wonder if it would fit the 3100, that would be handy with live view, perhaps.

BTW, I did notice one advantage on the D300 compared with the D200, the rear viewing screen is a bit larger, with my eyes getting worse now for close work, a larger screen is a big help

No photo of the spotting scope ?

What is his eBay seller name Robert I will take a look for it.

Most zooms wont perform well on IR but my Sigma 10-20mm does a good job.
My Nikon 20mm f2.8 is great for IR but unfortunately it only a 30mm on a D70.

Has anyone converted a D3 for IR ?

Yes, has been done but it's problematic, the D3 and most of the newer bodies have a little IR lamp and sensor either side of the shutter which monitor the shutter speed and automatically make corrections 'on the fly'. Unfortunately the IR lamp causes fogging of the image on a converted camera; masking the lamp triggers errors. There are workarounds but I seem to remember they involve altering the firmware. o.O

Will PM you...

Maybe I need to think of converting the D700 as that is a smaller camera as well.

I have to say that is a waste of D3.

The D200 is perfectly acceptable as most subjects have sunlight so don't need high ISO.

Does the D300 have this IR light thingie?

I always saw that as a potential upgrade from the D200.

Recognising with IR, that you don't ever get the same degree of sharpness, using the best cameras and lenses might be overkill.

I agree but I have a spare D700 that would convert nicely.

I agree a D300 would be a good option but my D300 is now dedicated to my underwater housing.

Apparently according to LifePixel website.

Nikon D40, D60, D90, D300, D300s, D3000, D5000, D7000 are not great for IR as they have problems with setting a decent WB Preset when used in IR.

The D3 series, D4 and D700 models make use of Nikon's new infrared self-diagnostic shutter monitor circuitry. This function involves an internal infrared LED emitter/detector chip that could fog images. In most cases it will not be an issue unless you shoot in overcast weather using higher ISO and/or longer exposures.

The D90, D300, D300s, D3000, D5000, D7000, D600, D610, D800 and D800E these models are random, some will white balance all filters but some not at all but most just won't white balance with our Super Color & Enhanced filters. Will need to shoot in RAW and use Nikon Capture NX2 software to set the white balance.

So that leaves as good cameras for conversion the D1, D1X, D70, D70S, D80, D100, D200 and D2x.

Then of course there is the Fuji Xpro1, XE1, X100 that shoot IR (unconverted) but with a R72 filter on the lens very nicely but you need a tripod to use this as exposures are typically 2-4secs with ISO 400 at f5.6-f8.  It is easy to pre-visualise the IR result with the TFT screen.

I don't do a preset for the WB anymore ....even with the D200.

I shoot raw and adjust the yellow-blue to c. -80. ( i think ...without checking) This was the setting I always got from my precalibrated D70 whenever I opened its raws.

So I wouldn't discount these models.

I don't however like the idea of the IR fogging with the newer models you mention. One of the complications with IR is getting the right exposure in shaded or overcast situations. The meter increases the exposure based on the visible light without regard to the IR additional exposure...result over exposure.

Yes, somebody must have been taking the pee at that moment!!! LOL Just like Flicker seem to have lost the e, when they made their website. o.O

I have been struggling to understand how to easily post images into forums from Flicker. Several people have tried to help me but I couldn't master it, so knowing Jeff (Blackfox) hosts all his stuff on Flicker I figured he must be a good chap to ask, so we spent over half an hour on the 'phone trying to figure what the problem was. Thankfully it was trivial, between us we finally sussed it when he had the same issue trying to post into this forum while we were on the 'phone. Thanks again Jeff.

Jeff realised we were using html rather than BBCode, I hadn't spotted the selections available on the Flicker screen. We got there in the end! :bowing:
