Which lens is your 'IR' lens now then?
17-35 AFS f2.8 ....which on DX is 25-52
Incidentally ...the 80-200 AFS f2.8 is good for IR, and as the 28-70 is from the same time period, it may well be ok.
Have you tried the 18-105 on IR? I thought it was ok but struggled to focus at 18mm.
