The 'Report' button is on the list of vital improvements,  has been since about day two.

In the mean time any members who have concerns regarding post content can PM or eMail one of the Mods.  Apologies for the delay in implementing this feature but there is a workaround.

Might I ask exactly WHAT is 'reporting' as applies to a forum. I really have no idea what is being discussed. I'm probably just extremely dense.

surely it would be far simpler to just ditch this section as it seems to be where most (sorry ALL of the aggro) appears o.Oo.O

Maybe for 2013 we should simply resolve to post less inflammatory subject matter?
For the life of me I don't know why we need to use the funds we donated to commission software revisions of this sort.
Any spam and unwanted posts are already swiftly dealt with by the moderators.
All that's needed is a little self moderation.

Vital?
Hardly think the traffic on this forum warrants it.

I suppose not VITAL but almost every forum I have seen has one.  Before I had Admin rights I had to eMail and PM  JK or Steve to ask for the spammers to be deleted.

The level of traffic isn't so much the issue as the level of spammers and the lack of self moderation as you put it so succinctly.

The Report button should come as standard. it should not be a to be paid for extra.  It's a bit like having to paying extra for anti squeal shims on a BMW, the BMW Brakes shouldn't squeal to start with on a car of that class and price.

Maybe I am missing the point?
Seems all a bit hammer to crack a nut! Different matter on sites having 50-100 or more daily posts.
With the addition of the Recent Topics button our 2 or 3 ? daily posts are brought under our noses,  such that offensive posts won't be hidden from you moderators or necessitate a policeman's button.
Sorry if I sound a bit jaundiced....just sounds like unnecessary work. But whatever!

My point is that it should have been there from day one, at no extra cost. Regardless how much or little it's used.

We have 'Friend' and 'Ignore' buttons which are useless in my opinion, but lack the much more useful 'Report' button.  OK, I no longer have the need and given I am usually browsing the forum early I usually pick up the spammers first thing and I can now delete their posts and memberships. So I suppose you are right.

OK I see where you are coming from.
I just feel in a forum that has only a handful of posts each day; knowing you and JK patrol the forum early and regularly, the likelihood of anyone else prempting you is remote enough to question any additional expenditure on the upgrade. But if its a missing feature so be it.

Wasnt even aware of those other buttons. Don't need a 'button' to identify friends or ignore foolish prattle.

The button will be a no cost option as it is a few lines of code.
I need to make sure that it is implemented correctly so it work.

Basically it is a button that appears in every post that if pushed sends an email to the moderators so they can check the post and decide actions to take. On very large forums it is useful but we are only a small forum so Robert, Rich or I usually get there first.

The friend and ignores button seem to be set up more for a dating website.  The report button is a good idea because it lets the moderators know that you think something is wrong without having to go to a different page and write an explanation and then send it.

Like you could get one of those little remote control helicopters and hook a camera up to it and find out what your cat does all day by following him around the neighborhood.

It seems to occur when posting and the browser either stalls or restarts the transaction.
I can manage to reproduce if I use a 'slow' wireless connection.

There is an adjustment in the admin panel which is currently set to 30 seconds which is supposed to prevent a re-post in that period. Looking at the timing of Ed's posts there could be just over 30 seconds separation.  Perhaps that needs raising to 45 or 60 seconds JK?

It would mean members couldn't make another post within the same 60 second period, I don't think that would be a problem.

I am not sure if that helps as this may just stall the browser for a longer period. I guess we can up the time to 45 seconds. I will do that as a test.

I've only ever posted once since using the iPad.On the PC it was quite easy to inadvertently post many times if you were impatient and clicked more than once. The digitiser pen was very prone to this, using the double click slider option.
Edit... I tried to send this several times but failed
Sent (once) from my iPad.

I will revert to the normal delay of 30 secs.

The browser sends the transaction. The fact that it is not 'committed' as a post and then a second identical transaction occurs comes along with is notionally the same/identical is not seen by the server as a single transaction but as two transactions and results in the two being posted as two posts within the threshold period rather than as just one.

Might be in for a speed bump soon, just went out to the shops, BT were pulling a new cable into the duct which runs past the end our our street.  I stopped and asked the man if it was our new fiber connection. Apparently it is, won't be on just yet but maybe in a couple of weeks... I won't hold my breath because it was supposed to be on by June 2012 but at least it's a step nearer.

I think it is fast enough

300 to 400Kb/sec or 0.3 to 0.4Mb/sec Up and 7Mb/sec Down would be typical within a mile or so of the exchange. I am about 4 miles from the exchange and apparently the main underground cables are in very poor condition.

I am told the modem in the exchange 'negotiates' a reliable speed with the modem in my house over a week or so which maximizes the speed for the line conditions.

The up speed is rarely impeded and is usually much lower than the down speed. The ratio between the two isn't a relevant factor. At Ulverston it was 0.4Mb Up and 8Mb/sec Down. The exchange was just round the corner.

When the fiber does come I MAY get 10Mb Up?

http://www.speedtest.net

Go to this URL and register, it will then remember all your tests and give you a graph of your speeds over time.

There are many distracting adverts and stuff on the page but it's the best one I have found so far.

As you can see the downloads fluctuate, this is because they are running at the limit of the wiring, because the uploads are comfortably within the capacity they don't fluctuate much.

This is the range I pay for with my cable package. I could get faster but the cost goes up. Not sure how they do that.

That sounds pretty good to me, I would be well pleased with that.

There are three of us using my connection right now and occasionally it grinds to a standstill while the boys are watching You Tube clips or playing games on Facebook.

What concerns me with a very fast connection is that the amount downloaded can skyrocket without being noticed, that can create problems with the fair usage policy.

Facebook, which I know almost nothing about, has a games section for children, my two boys Michael 12, and Christopher 10, like to play the games on there.  Their mother tried to explain the benefits and features of Facebook to me for an hour. She almost lives on Facebook.  I couldn't see any reason to get involved.

Fair usage policy is what I have on my Broadband service. My ISP allows me about 20Gb a month but they don't want me to use it all in two days, that would be unfair, they want me to spread that 20Gb over at least the whole month.  They are flexible on the 20Gb if I go over a bit that's OK for one month but not every month, although they will remind me I have gone over.

That said I would be pushed to get 20Gb in a month with my connection!

Possibly so he could report all these silly posts on photography?

Gary
I have reported you a few times today!

Mainly because I clicked the button while doing the image editing thread...just to see what happened.

I niavely thought the button would open a textbox window for you to type exactly WHY you are reporting someone...like on other forums.

As it stands, it must merely ring a bell in JK's living room....it seems.

:baffled:

Sooooorry!:byebye:

The bell works very quickly too! I have already been told by JK I have until the end of the day to clear out of here and report to the Canon forum. At least now I know what "Report" means. :-(

Well Gary you may need to go to Canon if you dont get that Photoshop purchased cleared by the CFO.

If you have an EggHead, MicroCentre, or the like then go and look in the EndBins or End of Season and Returns sales. You wont get a Photoshop CS6 but you might get CS5.

You wont find a CS3 in the end stock items in USA!

I dont think I could do without the features in CS6/CS5

All joking apart...JK, isn't there an option to open a dialogue box? It would save a lot of false pushes (accidental and mischievous) if there was an intermediate page which you needed to send or cancel.

What features do you find indispensable?

The content aware fill feature makes for adding background or removing and refilling parts off the image. Also the liquify feature is excellent as it works really nicely in CS5/6.

From an Admin perspective it is also very crude as it can only PM one person.  My preference would be for it to email the forum moderator(s) and like you say to force the reporting person to put in some reason for the reporting of the post.I will suggest it to the developers.

Actually I'd rather have the Prune/Graft feature first so I could split out some of the interim post on other stuff into a new topic so that it was easy to find later.

I agree with what JK wrote, about the content aware fills.

Smart objects has improved a lot since CS3, making any filter application adjustable later. Smart sharpen is also better if I remember correctly.

As well as Liqify, I have also used puppet warp which is quite useful. HDR in CS6 is much much better than previous versions saving the need for a separate program, and so is photomerge, I didn't get PTGui again when I moved to Mac, CS6 can keep up.

The ACR slider controls and results are much better, but I get that part in Lightroom.

I think we need to close this topic now and move our Photoshop discussions to a new topic that I have created called 'Elements or Photoshop?'

I've now locked this topic.
