I have to write an essay on my high school education, and submit it to my academic advisor as part of my extracurricular activities. I have been trying to write it, but I don't know where to begin. I have to make it a 5 paragraph essay with an introduction and conclusion. I am looking for the better way to write my essay to make differently. Does anyone have suggestions/advice on how to find inspiration, how to get past my nerves and doubt, or some essay writing tips? Maybe how to start the essay off?

Welcome to the forum Mary, not totally sure you have come to the write place but will do our best to help... ;-)

My father always tried to instil into me not to use two words where one will convey the message adequately. So that's my first tip, in other words don't pad the essay out just to make it seem more, that won't impress the reader.

As photographers we sometimes lack inspiration, a regular suggestion on this forum is to go to a bookshelf, select the fifth book from the left and open it an a random page, scan the text and make a photograph connected with what you read. You could try something similar or try writing about your favourite pastime?

Oh, and maybe try to make it funny (but not silly)? Remember your tutor will have read many boring essays, yours needs to stand out.

Welcome to the forum Mary.

I agree with Robert's suggestions.
Do you have a topic for your essay. You need to know what you are writing about before you start. Choose a topic you enjoy.

When looking for photographic inspiration I have a simple trick. I write down a random 7 digit number...eg 7315546

I take a book from the bookcase...The 7th book on the 3rd shelf.I open the book at a page 155 and go to the 4th line and read the 6th word. I then set out to photograph something that encapsulates that word.
Before you say it...YES.... Ive taken photos that encapsulate 'and', 'if', 'then' and 'but'.

Im not that hot on essays (too busy taking photos) but it strikes me that a 5 paragraph essay leads you to select 3 key education points....2 good 1 bad? that mean something to you. Then tackle the intro and conclusion.

One of my favourite examples of students being asked to write a short essay that included...religion, sex and mystery.
The winner was....

"Good God, I'm pregnant! I wonder who did that?"
