I think I have a near equivalent to the Windows program FastStone Viewer.
It is Lyn.
http://www.lynapp.com/
It has a free trial period of 15 days.

Thereafter It does require a small payment of $20 but it is better than anything Free or small priced. The only software on Mac that is more featureful then you need to get Photo Mechanic 5 which is x10 the price!

Just D/L'd it, seems very good, snappy and plenty of features

It doesn't seem to have found Lightroom's keywords though.

Need to export your metadata to xmp files that live with your images!

But still not working?
I'll take another look on my nice new 10.8.3 rocket!

Macbook Air 13" took 15mins to convert/upgrade from 10.6.8 to 10.8.0 with no hitches or glitches. Then 15 hours to get/download the upgrades of stuff from App Store! How I hate this business model. I much rather download once and have it stored for reuse in my software archive!,

After the download, stop the installation, by telling the dialogue not to install, then go look in the Updates folder in the main library. there will be a folder there with a number with the last modified date of just now, That was your update download.

Copy that fold to a safe place, either another drive or a USB stick and un mount it or remove it. then go back to software update and resume the update. The update file in the update folder will be nuked when it has completed the update.

I have added a screenshot of the folder with a recent update in it. Note the path at the bottom of the window.

You simply double click on the main package to initiate an update/install.

What really annoys me is the update being downloaded without my consent. I was watching my network monitor the other day and noticed it going haywire, in fact it was the update in that folder below, it downloaded all by itself. When I got notification it was ready to install. Fortunately I saved the update to another drive before I did the actual installation. Otherwise I would have to d/l three more updates, one for each computer.

Thanks Robert.
I was much easier in the past before all the App Store and iCloud stuff.

I agree, the simplified 'consumer' solutions are bloody hard work unless you are a 'consumer'.

I liked it when they were part way between geek and consumer. I could handle that.

They are too busy trying to appeal to the mindless masses with the 'It just works' approach, so they can increase the 60 billion (or whatever it is now) Dollars cash they have in the bank.

One of the latest and best improvements is the ability to do conversions (single or batch).

You can convert from NEF or PSD, specify the max size in pixels, and rename or not and put them all in a folder or not and it's pretty much a job of filling in the size and clicking once you set it up... I use this a lot to convert files to jpg for web or posting.

Glad that you have returned.

Hope that you enjoy Lyn.  There are not as many nice features as in FastStone but cant win every which way round!

That gives me certain rights and expectations.
I shouldnt need to download a patch multiple times to apply to my computers.  Even Microsoft acknowledges that.

Unfortunately the 'Silicon Valley mentality' seems to be spreading with little idea that most people actually dont have more than 1MB except in city conurbations and research sites.

Hi There photo people, I had a look at the LYN trial software and I cannot find any way to convert multiple files to B/W. Does anyone know if it is possible with LYN or is there an alternate MAC software that anyone can recommend.

No Lyn doesnt provide those features it just gives image browsing and slideshows and some RAW file conversion (personally I would use it for RAW conversion but would use LightZone which is current in version 4 and beta 4.05.).

If you want lite image editing then use Preview for changes to Contrast, Exposure, Saturation, Cropping etc.

Current theme is Blue
