I've had Lightroom 4 for a while now, but yesterday was my first serious use. I found myself at home, yesterday was my 42nd birthday, and as a special birthday present I got - Chicken Pox. Apparently you can indeed get it twice. So in an enforced stay at home period I had a play with Lightroom. The way the sliders work has changed completely - and is a srtartling improvement. The shadows and highlight sliders are now simply incredible. If you like an HDR look by flattening out the contrast with the two above sliders and then bumping up the clarity you get something very similar. I'm tempted to go back through my old catalogue and see what I can do! Really want a wide angle lens now 3:) |

Happy Birthday Rich. Sorry to hear that you have Chicken Pox. Yes you can get it multiple times as it is caused by the Vaccinia virus where you get reduced protection after a time. In adult life it camn be more serious if you havent had it before. Also it is possible that it changes to a Shingles type infection. Hope you get better soon. What wide angle do you want ? I guess you want to use on the D3s. |

It'll either be the 14-24mm or the 16-?? cheaper version. I can"t afford either at the moment but I think they would work really well with the gritty HDR look that is easy to achieve with this version of Lightroom. |

How you get over them soon Rich, they are not a nice thing to have but at least you have lightroom 4 to play with. |

I think the 14-24 is very desirable but in Oz will get very dusty as the front element is large and there is no way to put a filter over the front. The hood is a little petal thing. I think that the 16-35mm f4 VR is the one I would get as it takes 77mm filters same as all my major lenses (24-70 f2.8, 85mm f1.4, 70-200 f2.8 VR). Nice move Nikon.  So for me the 16-35. Great wide walkabout lens!. |

I just ordered LR4 awaiting the confirmation that I can use my School Employee discount on it .. Im stepping into LR line from Elements . Ive heard its alot better |

Well done Rick, Lr 4 is a big step up, the way it manages images, and processes NEF's in the same way as Photoshop does is very good. I particularly like the quick assessment after a session, I am starting to use the MBP (Laptop) for my initial assessments rather than the desktop. It's so easy to compare similar images, select the best and reject and erase the rest. Can reduce 3 or 400 NEF's to 20 or 30 in quick style. The only downside, if you can call it that, is there is no facility for an upgrade at Adobe educational rates. However the educational price is, (or was?) comparable with the retail upgrade price for most of their products. |

I basically got the Educational pricing where it was 1/2 the retail price. SOmetimes being a school system employee is a good thing |

I'm learning fast that I need a manual . PSE always let you select a " suggested fix" that soled 90% of the issues and allowed tweaking. To be honest programs like this scare me and I like to use minimal editing to try to keep me " pure" like film . Any suggestions ? |

I don't think a manual would help Rick, Look at your image and think what it needs. If it needs cropping, do that first, then hit return and it's cropped. Look at the histogram, if it's all to one side then it may need levelling, try auto levels, if need be drag the levels by hand and see if that improves the image. Then work down the sliders one at a time, working from the top, carefully adjust each slider to see if that improves the image. You will learn far more by experimenting and trying different setting than you will from reading a manual. Remember with Lightroom you can start over by hitting the reset button. |
