As one of my sons stepped on his big brothers laptop, I've had to donate my laptop to the big one and I've managed to get an iBook G4 off ebay for me. Lets just hope that Apples are as good as some of you say they are. |

jk wrote:That is a really old apple I hope it hasnt gone mouldy. Well not wishing to throw water on your parade but the G4 iBook would not be on my list. I have had two, the motherboards crack by the graphics chip. Don't pick it up by the front left corner alone, that was what I did and it cracked the motherboard. I tried three other (used) motherboards and they were all the same. Be sure to lift it at both sides with two hands. The best of that bunch was the G4 Aluminium model, the Titanium ones hinges were troublesome. I still have a G4 Al and it still works well despite having been dropped (by the previous owner). |

You may be fine Andy but I felt I had to mention it. While you may be dipping your toe in the water, the current crop are totally different. Both the hardware and the software. |

If you wait for the coming new generation MacBooks you will be able to buy one and use it for six months then sell it for very close to what you paid If you don't like it then you will have lost very little The iBook g4 is a completely different, long since deprecated, processor family stuck on an operating system several generations back In it's day this OS was great, but now.... Visit http://lowendmac.com/ for useful info on coping with a seven+ year old Mac FYI (most recent version of the iBook G4, from mactracker) Original OS Mac OS X 10.4.2 (8D37) Later OS Mac OS X 10.4.4 (8G32) Maximum OS Mac OS X 10.5.8 Processor Speed 1.33 (12.1-inch) or 1.42 (14.1-inch) GHz Number of Cores 1 Cache 64 KB L1, 512k on-chip (1:1) L2 System Bus 133 (12.1-inch) or 142 (14.1-inch) MHz Benchmarks 1.33 GHz: 689, 1.42 GHz: 774 Graphics Card ATI Mobility Radeon 9550 Graphics Memory 32 MB Hard Drive Interface Ultra ATA/100 (ATA-6) Note the benchmark score. Just for fun I have dug out my G4 Al 867 Mhz Powerbook. It just needed the battery charging, on start up it immediately asked for the new wifi password, within minutes I am posting here. The main problem is I can't swipe or scroll from the trackpad. :-( Oh, and iCloud doesn't work here, I had to save this site to my bookmarks nomally once I save a bookmark it propagates to all my other computers almost instantly. |

I admit that Leopard does seem very quaint compared with Snow Leopard and Lion! However in Lion I do find that the Microsoftisation (lets keep users away from any of the dangerous stuff) to be very annoying, which is why I am happy to stay with SL and add the custom apps. Also the Cloud still leaves me cold, I can synchronise everything locally across my network (which is my Cloud at 100MB/sec, sorry havent moved to 1GB/sec yet). |

I am a very skeptical user and don't embrace all the new 'features' gladly or in some cases at all but the iCloud is so seamless and inconspicuous you don't notice it, It's still very much in it's infancy at the moment but it's gradually creeping right through the whole Mac/iDevice experience. In some ways I wish I had an iPad so I could experience more of the iCloud features but as I have said I have yet to think of a compelling reason to get one. |

jk wrote:Anytime anyplace browsing ? I think the issue for me is the 'anyplace' browsing? Ok, I guess I shouldn't have to ask this question but... Will the mobile version of the iPad which has a sim card, G3, or the new supposed G4 versions act as a Wi-Fi hub or router? I have heard the iPhone will but I haven't noticed any comment about the iPad in this respect. Last year I bought a G3 mobile modem-router which will serve up to 5 devices. http://store.three.co.uk/view/product/ql_catalog/threecatdevice/2324 My reason being that I often go camping and take trips away from home. Normally the modem-router sits in my case or on the table by my MBP. Many times the mobile signal can be marginal, sometimes hanging the dongle in a window or even placing it on the roof of the car can boost the signal to a more usable level. I have no wish to have to stand by a window or sit on the roof of the car, just to be able to get a signal directly to an iPad. I definitely won't be having both devices. If I were to get an iPad I had planned to get a wi-fi only version, given that I already have a very capable modem-router, in fact it's faster and more reliable than my landline home connection! I suppose if I were to replace my current wi-fi mobile modem-router with an iPad and when I can't get a signal directly I would use it in the same way as the device I have now. Just seems a very expensive way of achieving what I already have via the Mobile modem-router and my MBP. |

What OS are you on Andy? Exactly which iBook do you have? This info can be found under the Apple menu "About this Mac' use 'shift + cmd +4' to do a drag selected screenshot of the info. Once you know the exact Model you can look it up at: http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/ibook/index-ibook.html That will tell you the maximum RAM which can be fitted and the latest OS it can run. If it's a clean install of the OS it should simply find all the available wi-fi networks as soon as you start up for the first time at a given location and ask which one, then when you select yours, enter the passkey and that's it. It may be the PO had disabled wi-fi and gone wired. That is what I do with my desktop Macs They are all on a Gigabyte network. Keeping the it on the wi-fi every time you use it can be a challenge, that was an issue in those days. That is one of the issues that have been fixed in the latest Macs. With my MBP once I ave entered the Passkey for a particular location whenever I open the computer at that location it instantly latches onto that wi-fi network and just works. That is as far as you want to push the G4 probably. OSX Leopard 10.5.8 is what I have on one of my test machines. I dont know if you can fit more memory. You need to press that More Info button to show the model number etc. |

Since I don't want a multitude of plans I simply use my iPhone to serve up wifi to my iPad (and other devices like the kids iPods) when away from home OR I navigate to a nearby fast food or coffee establishment for delicious free wifi I would consider (and in fact ended up with a pocket wifi dongle as a bonus on my plan) as an option since I can place it where it can receive the best signal and then sit comfortably connected to it over wifi (if you are using a 3G/4g iPad in weak signal areas I suppose you could hold it over your head/out the window/tent etc Some pocket wifi dongles will even allow the addition of an antenna for improved range/signal I'm unlikely ever to buy an iPad that has 3G/4G etc since the personal hotspot feature on most smartphones and the cheap pocket wifi dongle mean this feature on the iPad just doesn't get used |

Are you referring to the wifi issue? I had a client just a few days ago who could connect to wifi but Web pages wouldn't load A few months ago a friend had a similar problem The solution for my client was to turn off airport and delete the airport item from the network connections (system preferences, network), then close and save network changes Finally open system preferences/network again and add an airport option back using the plus button at bottom left and turn airport back on The solution for my friend was to disable the third party utility 'little snitch' which he had managed to configure to block all network traffic |

I think the option 'personal hotspot' is not visible in the main settings menu until you have visited settings>general>network>personal hotspot and selected 'on' After this it will remain available as the 3rd option under 'settings, regardless of its on/off status I recommend installing something like quota to track your usage and check how much you will get charged if you go over your quota I got charged $100 for going 500mb over my 500mb quota (refunded because I had already requested a 2000mb data bolt on for $10/month) A client of mine got charged $25000 for using a few hundred megabytes when overseas thanks to a helpful Telstra employee (young lad in a telstra shop) telling him it shouldn't be too expensive to use roaming (I think the question related to calls and the victim didn't understand the difference/option of data roaming which was switched on Telstra kindly reduced it to $2500, after he complained It's a shame he wasn't already a client at the time this happened since I would have made sure he was able to remain connected at a very low cost using Skype/free wifi |

Doug wrote:I think the option 'personal hotspot' is not visible in the main settings menu until you have visited settings>general>network>personal hotspot and selected 'on' Telstra (actually all Australian Telcos) have some of the most expensive roaming charges in the world, they are as standard walking away from large bills because folk just can't pay them. A week in NY, receiving 60-80 e-mails a day on a Blackberry with Optus was about $1000, and thats without attachments. |

Ahhh. Finally found it. Or I think so anyway. On my iPhone 3G I have to enable wifi. Then go into /General/Network/Cellular Data = On Then It shows Internet Tethering via USB or Bluetooth. My iPhone is only on iOS 4.2.1 I'm not sure it will go higher as it should have automatically upgraded to iOS5 when I link to iTunes. |

In the past I think its been said that you dont need anti virus software for Macs. Is this still the case? If you do need it, any recommendations as to which one? |
|||||||||
Robert
|
No, you don't need it as of now, although that could change? The recent infection has been dealt with by updates from Apple. I don't think OS 10.6 (which is substantially different from OS 10.7 and 10.8) will be a tempting target for potential virus infection so you should be safe anyway. I think Sophos has been mentioned as a Mac anti virus vendor but Doug will probably know more than me on that. Have you looked at the Apple Support Community (ASC): https://discussions.apple.com/community/ There are lively discussions there on all things Apple, with a membership ability ranging from moron to genius and all levels between! Look out for Epochmaker... LOL Just put Antivirus in the search box and sit back! |

Good to hear you are up and running Andy. The confidence will come with use Mac screens tend to be more accurate especially on laptops. You need to set the gamma somewhere between the standard Mac setting of 2.2 and the PC setting of 1.8, I read that somewhere and it seems to work well enough. So, having dipped your toe in the water you think you may step in? DId you try Firefox or Opera? Using Safari there are some easy ways to save You Tube video's. |
