I have recommended the newish Nikon 70-300 f3.5-5.6 AFS G lens for travel use. DxO have been testing various lenses on the D800 to find the best of the best. http://nikonrumors.com/2013/03/22/dxomark-best-lenses-for-the-nikon-d800-camera-part-2-telephoto-lenses.aspx/#more-56430 The Nikon 70-300 comes out as the best telephoto. |

Sounds like a lot of lens for the money, but have you looked at the 28-300? It's more money, but more range. I've been very satisfied with it except for relatively slow focus (not like the old 80-400 but not like the 70-200 either) I guess it all depends on what kind of travelling you are doing - for trips that are just "tourist" trips, I want small, light bodies and lenses (or lens) and will be willing to let my feet do the zooming like the good old days . If you are really going to be shooting a lot, then bring in the zooms |

I think that the 28-300 has some issues with control of distortion at w/a end. In reality I dont usually rate DxO tests as I think they are somewhat artificial wrt real world use! |

Looks like the real winner is the new 70-200mm f4. Looks like it can compete with the much heavier f2.8 version if f4 is ok with the user. Not to mention the cost factor. |

The Fuji xe1 covers the wide to standard range, the 70-300 with the D7000 gives a lightweight pairing. It also is good for IR...although a bit long on the DX body for scenics. |
