Seems like getting a Nikon 400mm f2.8 with a Kenko DG300 Pro x2 (like I currently have) is a smaller and lighter (relative term!) option.

Think you missed cheaper JK? (Also relative term in this case.) Good, long, light and fast lenses don't come cheap.
