This is a mammoth historic project, about 16,000 images many captured on 5x4 glass plates are being made available to the public via the internet for the first time.

http://www.britainfromabove.org.uk

It is a very exiting project because anybody can involve themselves, it is to a degree interactive. I have started groups for English Castles and Lakes, and added images to other groups. There are unidentified images, it's fun browsing through them hoping to be able to solve the mystery of where they were taken. I am sure over time they will nearly all be identified, some are very distinctive.

Not all the images have been released, they will be released in batches every three or four months for the next few years. They cover the length and breadth of the UK and many nooks and crannies.

I just hope it isn't ruined by idiots. The security seems lax and the freedom to post and tinker seems great. At the moment it is very slow due to the high usage levels.

Google Earth allow you to use some of their older image data so you can track changes to areas that you are familiar with.

However this UK project is much more comprehensive from what I have seen.

Current theme is Blue
