Southend no longer hosts an airshow - it was the biggest in Europe . However we still act as a base for the airplanes flying at Eastbourne this weekend and if it weren't for the trees I would be able to see down to the airport. So I thought I would make use of the scaffolding tower to get a better view of the planes going in and out. Lol - they are very fast going over my house but I caught a few reasonable shots of one of the nine planes! Click here to comment on this image. Click here to comment on this image. Thanks - unfortunately they were flying in a group straight at me and then turning over me so it was a bit frantic trying to focus in on one! On the way out earlier they were flying slower and were further away, but then my 70-200 didn't have the reach to pull them in .... Click here to comment on this image. Tried with the 500mm f8 reflex today but the light not as good but quite sharp, you can clearly see the pitot tube on the side of the nose and the three smoke injector nozzles on the tail. Click here to comment on this image.

We had a couple of Chinooks flying back and forth over the garden today. Wasn’t ready for them, so grab shots at too fast a shutter speed setting to get rotor blur. And not ideal angle….directly overhead Click here to comment on this image.

It does look a bit odd with stationary blades! - to get a full disc would need an exposure of 0.267 sec as Chinook's rotors spin at 225 rpm - at 1/60 you would only get 22 degrees of blur but I guess that would look better. Can you add some blur in post?

The first one has some trails off the rotors.

The photo isn’t good enough to warrant any work on it. It’s a reminder that knowing what settings are required is of no consequence when you have no time to react. We had the Red Arrows fly directly over our garden a month back at ‘zero height’ while I was up a tree pruning! They were en route to RAF Marham (10miles south) for a family day flypast. They have been doing it for several years and I STILL forget to check the date each year. Maybe in 2023

Usually when I hear a warbird it is always too late to grab the camera and our garden is surrounded by trees which doesn't help! The scaffolding I have up for the roof made a good platform and since the planes were here for the whole weekend I had multiple opportunities - the local paper even had the exact times of take off and return! See here - https://www.military-airshows.co.uk/press22/redarrowsschedule2022.htm

Apparently there weren’t the usual 7 planes airborne for the last few displays. Maybe they don’t like relocating to Waddington at the end of the year?
