Ok, playing the devil's advocate

Why do we need PS, Lightroom etc?

Jan has just downloaded a photo organiser APP onto her iPad....for £2.99. It enables her to create albums, sort images, title, add meta tags, etc on her 1500 images. But it also has 'basic' editing functions. Ok you get simple sliders rather than curves and levels and you need to be careful in your adjustments, but perfectly adequate. It's even got layer masks of sorts!

One of the key raison d'etre of programmes like PS is to optimise images for output to print. If you don't intend to ever print your images it surplus to requirement.

This may be heresy coming from my 'pro background ...but I am starting to doubt the need for top end software. My eyes tell me if an image looks right on the screen...if it's only ever going to be viewed thus, why bother with the Rolls Royce programmes any more?

Coming from a background of needing four or more text editors to create a simple text document. I welcome only needing two pieces of software to do almost anything with an image.

Having found how to adjust levels in Lightroom I could probably do 99% of my image adjustment and enhancement now, but I definitely need ps to insert aircraft in landscapes!!!

I remember you admonishing me for experimenting wit various software and suggesting I would be better sticking with proven software rather than dabbling in the Unknown.

I stuck with that ethos and I am sure I am better off for having done so.

For someone coming fresh to photography then by all means experiment, that's the best way to gain experience but no good trying to teach an old dog new tricks!

o.O

I tend to agree but having invested so much time and money in Photoshop I am loathe to dump it.
There are other equally good RAW processing softwares around for less money but for pixel level image editing I think that Photoshop is hard to beat. That said I am now stuck at PS CS6 and wont be updating to a subscription version EVER!
