I think it would be a slide in item so it would lock into the correct position. This also requires the huge number of electrical connections for the sensor data to made correctly. Current technology is moving some AF components onto the sensor as well so this complicates the connections. I am sure the physicals are easy compared to the screams and cries that will come from the marketing people as they dont really 'understand' the mentality of end users, only the racking up of more consumer spend and unit sales!! Potentially a person would buy one camera body and several high cost sensor units rather than several camera bodies and keep trading them in. For example if this beast existed now I would want it as a D800 body with a 36MP, 24MP and 16MP sensor. How that said it is more likely to come first in a D5/6 camera. |

You could still find, for example, a replaceable D800 sensor costing £1000+. |

The cost of the tooling for the bodies is high but most of the shells are either ABS or magnesium alloy. So once you have that if you had a user replaceable sensor then it is just firmware and sensor engineering. Happy for a replaceable sensor to be around £$€1000. |

Dont think it will come in a D4 D5 possibly. I think the removable sensor feature may mean that we get a thicker (front/back) camera but I might be wrong. |
