A new Nikon AW1 camera that can be submerged!! http://nikonrumors.com/2013/09/19/nikon-1-aw1-underwater-mirrorless-camera-and-two-1-nikkor-aw-lenses-officially-announced.aspx/ No good for me as I dive deeper than that but for most people it will be a very rugged camera. The camera is based around the Nikon1 series, so has the smaller sensor size found in the Nikon V1 and J1 cameras. I think that this will be a good entry level camera for people stepping up from phonecameras and P'n'S. Notice it has its own range of interchangeable lenses that are waterproof to 20m. |

Hope they warn people not to change lenses underwater. |

JK- You hit it...great starter kit for divers. All they need is the wide angle and a good strobe Tom |

The strobe is coming soon. i have seen some pictures of it and it is a small unit but it is very nicely designed. Wide angle is a problem as the sensor makes a x3 multiplier so they really need a 5mm lens. |

Or a Fisheye? Talk about the tail wagging the dog... <vbg> Attachment: Screen Shot 2013-09-21 at 07.53.34.jpg (Downloaded 42 times) |

The problem will be that to use the AW1 underwater you need to use the specific AW underwater lenses. At present there are only 2. |

The biggest problem is that no one from Nikon has actually taken the camera out diving. Consensus management has dictated that divers and in fact their whole customer base are yearning for more telophoto lenses with no macro capabilities. |

Indeed the camera seems to be more aimed at entry level divers and snorkelers. Entry level divers really should be more worried about management of themselves and their buddies. To add photography into the mix is adding complexity that can lead to accidents. For myself I shoot with a Canon G12 in a housing for my semi serious stuff, for the serious stuff I use a D70 or D90 in a SeaSea housing with either a 14mm or 10/20mm or a 105 Macro lens. Anything in between is less useful. |

That's why in my few excursions under I've never taken a camera. although I have dived quite a bit it's a couple of times a year, never being intense enough to become properly competant. |

I'd happily take this snorkeling however. |

Hand hold a 300 2.8?? Sure -- I did it for years. I am in my 80,s and still do. Ralph |

A 300 with an X2 converter on a V1 will give the equivalent of at least a 1200mm lens which by anybodies standard would be a challenge to hold steady unless well supported. I just checked, the multiplier is 2.7 so 300 x 2 = 600 x 2.7 =1620mm Mmm that is very Llllllllloooooonnnnnngggg |

the only trouble is rob ,having had one along with others on here ,is with the sensor being so small you do not gain ANY advantage over a larger sensor on a bigger camera .it looks good on paper but its a illusion ,went through all this with eric we did the tests ,and i then sold the camera . its the same as the illusionary crop mode on the d7100 it appears to give you longer focal length and indeed does on the exif data ,but if left at full frame and cropped down manually the final pixel count is exactly the same . bloody good marketing on nikons part but just a ploy in reality |

Well of course it's the same Jeff, there are no free lunches. I wasn't suggesting it was a good idea, in fact quite the reverse, it's a stupid idea to increase the focal length and reduce the sensor size. I am from the plate camera lobby!!! |

The D600 in FX is 24,160,256 pixels where as it is only 10,328,064 in DX mode. In Dx it has a bit less resolution than a D5000. There might be a small gain in sharpness using the smaller tubed higher pixel density camera, as opposed to cropping an FX immage, but I don't suspect that it would amount to much all things considered. |
