Nikon firmware updates for D300, D300S, D700 to support the new 800mm f5.6 AFS G lens Might be worth having the upgrade even if you dont have the lens just in case there might be a 'hidden' change. For D300 https://nikoneurope-en.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/57066 For D300S https://nikoneurope-en.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/57067 For D700 https://nikoneurope-en.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/57068

We have seen these firmware updates for all the current Nikon cameras. Whilst I appreciate they are there to support new products I do wonder about the effort required to release these firmware to support an exotic lens that will probably sell less than 200 units in its first year. There are many user requests for firmware extensions and updates that are more valuable that are sitting discarded or viewed as less valuable by Nikon. Maybe there needs to be a more open process around the firmware update process?

Definitely. Not sure about open firmware but more cognisance by manufactures rather than the tunnel vision policy which the big manufacturers seem to adopt while claiming to 'listen' to their users. Having read a few posts on forums in my time some of the user demands are downright stupid but some are well thought out and would benefit all users. One of the biggest issues with digital cameras is the complexity of the settings. It is so easy to alter a little used setting and forget you changed it, months later discovering it is affecting the use of the camera but can't figure why. This applies to hardware as well as firmware and software. The tripod brackets provided on some of the vastly expensive longer Nikkor lenses actually promote vibrations. It should NOT require the purchase of a third party bracket to perform a standard function like mounting a lens firmly on a tripod. Good design should not stop at the glass formulations and nano coating for which Nikkors are famed. It should cover every aspect of the product.

And to raise awareness of the new 800mm lens? I doubt many who actually need and can afford one are not aware of them but what would I know!

Well anyway in preparation for my batch test of the 198 versions of the 800mm f5.6 AFS VR that Gilbert is sending me I have updated the firmware on my D700 and D300.
