Me thinks that the D400 my never arrive as I can see a replacement for the D7000 being the top DX body. |

I do feel for those who really are waiting for a D7000 or D300 replacement. Logically the next release period is just into January 2013 for the CES show or maybe later for the PMA show in April. |

I find my D300 much less 'good' a camera than my D700. I think it is one of those things where I just dont know what it is but it doesnt seem to ever yield as good a result as my D3, D3s, D700. Just me I guess. It is not a DX thing as I get very good results from my X100, Xpro1, D1X and D70. |

The D300 always was inferior to the other two, but it's magnification effect diminished the impact. I don't disagree with your observation. I sold my D300 because of this. The problem is that the D7000 ( the next best DX camera ) isn't as fast at focusing as the D300. |

Interesting that you had a similar experience with the D300. It wasnt an IQ thing exactly nor handling but I never seemed to be able to get the hi ISO performance I wanted (only 1 stop difference but 1600 compared to 3200ISO) from the D300 compared to the D700 so I was always compromising. In sunny conditions no problem! |

Had it been launched on its own, like the D7000, we would have been less hypercritical. For me it was perfectly noise free in daylight up to 2000...which when viewed from a 'film days' perspective is quite remarkable. And one perhaps should say ...'that's more than good enough'. But for indoor and specialist shooting it might not be. At the time I did say that it probably would be the last pro DX body for sometime (if ever!), and current trends seem to confim that. But then, what makes a 'pro' body these days? For me its the speed of response, particularly focusing. I am not to bothered about robust titanium (or whatever) bodies as I dont mistreat mine like press pool bodies use to be. If they were to just speed up the D7000 responsivness I bet the D7X00 would fulfill most pro DX needs. |

that really about sums it up eric .having recently acquired a D300s i find that i'm using in preference to my D7000 IF the light is right .the speed and ease of use makes the 7000 look like a toy ,but the noise /iso problems are also obvious to a great degree . like everyone else sat on the fence and waiting for perfection but its taking its time appearing ,tried a D800 in a shop yesterday ,still checking out the files but can't see anything that would justify 2K for a body over what i already have. .arrrrghhh the waiting game .  |

The D7000 is a good camera but the controls are a bit harder to use and the focusing is that bit slower than the D300. As Eric says if they sort out a few things it might be ok. |
