I have a Nikon EH-6 AC adapter for another Nikon body, and would like to know if this will work with the D4 ( equipped with the battery chamber unit of course)?  Nikon USA shows a EH-6b as the adapter. - EdM.

The D4 uses a EH-6b adapter and a different connector to the EH-6 adapter I think.

Nikon site says.....
The EH-6b AC Adapter is an AC Adapter that can power select Nikon D-SLR cameras (only D4, not D3, D3S or D3X) from an AC power source, useful when shooting long sessions. It requires the use of the EP-6 power supply connector.

So it not definitively a no but they make it difficult !!!

Thanks JK. It's a pity that every time Nikon designs on of these things they have to develop a new battery system and accessory packages as well. - EdM.  :'(

The new battery system was forced on Nikon by legislation in Japan about batteries and their contacts (must be shielded). The legislation applies to all new products.

And that is why they have had a different battery system for every group of cameras going back to the FE?

I don't think so... More likely continuous product 'improvement' this time happily justified by legislation.

It also provides another hurdle for the pattern battery makers to clamber over, keep costs up and prevent users from carrying their perfectly good legacy batteries (also chargers and power supplies) forward to their new cameras.

What can we do about it? Not a lot, pay up and smile. o.O

Perhaps join Steve of Oxford in his battery factory?

Ed,
 I do not own a D3 or D4 camera.
I share your (love and hate) opinions about Nikon and mains-power.
I could not find a user manual for the EP-6 attachment.
In a pdf EH-6B manual there is mention of using it with a D3s camera, and pictures of the plugs (camera side) seem identical to the one in the EH-6A.pdf manual.

So: if you have an existing EH-6 (with no letters a/b etc) you may be in luck, any manual for the EP-6 connector should be conclusive.

In other respect there is confusion about Nikon's use of lettering for product versions, so the lettering on these adaptors may just indicate lesser variations.

Regards, Gilbert

I'd agree with Gilbert's assessment but I sure would hate to kill a D4 by using the wrong AC adapter.
I know of one person who killed his D1 trying to find a solution to the battery problem.
Fortunately my experiments were not so unfortunate and I managed to get a very nice battery from Sony that allowed me to take 5000+ pictures on one charge with the D1 series cameras (D1, D1h, and D1X).

The EH-6, which I have, was for the D2X & D2Xs. I share JK's worries over frying a new D4, so I sent the question to Nikon, but have yet to get a response. Unfortunately, the EH-6b is not in stock in Adorama's inventory, and doesn't even show up in a BH Photovideo search. I used the EH-6 (and the EH-5 and EH-5a) to power their respective cameras while cleaning sensors, so in anticipation of needing to do the same to a D4, I'm looking into this thing. - EdM

P.S., I never tried using any of the other AC units to power a body other than the one recommended, so I miss the thrill of wondering if I got smoke from cross matching.

:-O

Ed,
If I were in a hurry to use mains power on a D4, I would to the following:
If the connector from any existing EH-6 unit fits the idiosyncratic EP-6 adaptor it should be fine.

This is based on the presumption: if it fits, it should do no harm.
If you have more time (and/or no EP-6): wait for Nikon to give an answer, this could save you the time trying to order the EH-6B and returningit if there is no need to have it, beside your existing EH-6 unit.

Thanks Gilbert. I looked at the PDF version of the D4 manual on NikonUSA, and on page 393 it states that the EP-6 battery chamber adapter with the EH-6b AC adapter is needed for AC power, however, in parentheses it says that an EH-6 adapter may be used.  The site doesn't yet list a spec sheet for the EH-6b as it does for the EH-6 and EH-6a (both have the same output specifications). Maybe I have my answer? - EdM

Ed,
I think you are right in spotting these subtle wordings ("EH-6 ... can also be used").
I had missed them (in the section on Other accessories) in the pdf manual.

My local dealer seems to think it is ok

http://shop.graphicart.ch/Kamerasysteme---Objektive/Nikon/Nikon-D4/Nikon-EP-6-Adapter--zu-Netzadapter-EH-6B-fuer-Nikon-D4.html

(Edit) ... I just checked the manuals online... B is rated at 5A and EH-6(a) at 4.4A. I would take the risk myself ... Lower current should do no damage ( but might not drive the camera )

Ed:-)
