Nikon Rumors http://www.nikonrumors.com just announced a lens distortion control data update for many Nikon cameras from D90-D7000 and new D4, D800 and D800e.

I went on Nikon USA and downloaded update and loaded it on my D7000 and it went on in about 1 second.

Just thought some of you may want to know.

Thanks. I have downloaded it but not yet started to deploy. It seems to create a new firmware bank labelled L.

I cannot find any documentation about what is really going on though.

I thought this was only a feature of playback mode, where you want to do in-camera editing?

Does it correct lens distortion in the captured files?

Do not know for sure but on Nikon USA it says Used to correct barrel and pin cushion distortion during shooting and editing.

Do not know for sure but on Nikon USA it says Used to correct barrel and pin cushion distortion during shooting and editing.

So that suggests its applied automatically and to a fixed degree for the attached lens...which is ok. But not sure about the editing part...which suggests its a post process step??

Why would you NOT allow auto correction and opt to do it manually afterwards?

I'm a bit puzzled.

Eric

That is exactly what is unclear to me

Maybe a case of rtfm, but that is such an alien concept .....

I dug out the D7000 manual and in the shooting menu there is an entry Auto Distortion Contol with option on or off.

Best I can find out is it works for jpeg automatically and for NEF only when using ViewNX or Capture NX2.

Says jpeg auto corrected for linear distortion. I would think this was in camera?

Not sure how this plays in with the new data update firmware.

I think if the camera supports the feature then by reading the EXIF then CNX2 can provide auto correction for the supported lenses.

What I dont understand is why this isnt a purely post processing item irrespective of the camera used unless there is some in-camera processing occuring.

Ed said the D800e did not have a L field in the firmware list. My D7000 had an L field and I think version 1.02 before installing the update which is 1.06.

I am getting more confused the more I think about it. o.O

I do have an L bank declared in my firmware list, it is L=1.004
Since this is all firmware driven the presence/absence is changed by a new firmware version being installed.
I do have the latest D800 firmware version installed so now I just need to update the L firmware bank.

It took me awhile to figure out, just slow I guess, what RTFM was. I saw it in Ed's post but it wasn't until I read Eric's I caught on.

Sorry to bring up the owners manual issue. I do enjoy reading them from time to time - always learn something new. But I do understand some, if not most folks adversion to going near one.

And I am guilty of selective blindness - the D800E has an L field. i guess I just didn't see it.

Anyway, took the cameras for a day in the mountains. Thought you might like these.

Thanks Ed, that looks very refreshing. We have been suffering through over a week of 105-110 degree heat index days with at least another 7 forecast. Daily major storms with sever winds, hail, and winds. Over 1 million folks without power. At least 7 deaths as a result of trees falling on homes or occupied vehicles.
