I think the end of SLR production has been inevitable since the first practical digital cameras. To be sure, on day one the prospect of mirrorless cameras was dim and distant because of the absence of suitable high resolution display screens small enough to fit inside a camera. Over the intervening 20 or so years display technology has advanced and size has reduced. When Apple introduced its first phone with a camera it started the demise of compact camera manufacture, why carry a separate camera when I have a phone in my pocket?
It has taken a long time but the SLR has finally met its match after 85 years. I am not a fan of electronic viewfinders but I hope that there will be a steady trickle of D5 and D6 models on the second hand market to allow me to keep using SLRs for a while yet.

It has taken 15 months for a D5 to trickle down as far as me. Very nice camera.

Geoff, the old electronic viewfinders (EVF) were pretty ropey and yielded an image that was difficult to focus and compose an image on/in.
But the latest generation of EVFs found in Sony and Fuji cameras are nearly equivalent to a 5.6K TV with very fast refresh rates.
I now shoot mirrorless camera all the time and would be really hard pressed to want to go back to a DSLR or worse a film based SLR camera.
That said the nostalgia surrounding these cameras is immense. I still like the feel of the wind on of my Nikon F3 but I dont intend to put a film through the camera. But never say never!

Put simply, I wouldn't want a camera without a vertical grip and the Z6II and Z7II control grip is an abomination, looks like Nikon just cobbled it together from scrap. That leaves the Z9 and I neither can, nor want, to spend that much on a camera, let alone two of them. For now it will have to be SLRs and the best I can afford is the D5, currently paired with a D4s but I will upgrade that to another D5 eventually.
When the D3 came out I deliberately didn't handle one until it was within my budget, the same applies to mirrorless. I won't even get near one until I can afford to buy one.

I made the mistake of handling a D850 at a dealers. (I only went in for a memory card!). The rest was history.
Still the best Nikon in the hand with superb performance that set a standard that is hard to better today.

Mirrorless seems to cover all bases but there are times when a DSLR performs better, these times do seem to be less and less but there are situations where shooting is against the light where a DSLR works better.
I cant justify a Z9 or even upgrading my Z7. The Z7 is a good performer but newer cameras such as the Z9 and Fuji XH2 are so much more refined. Also APS-C is the new FX! My Fuji XH2S and XH2 have AF that performs better than my D850 which means that my Nikon inventory is in severe danger of going to MPB or Park Cameras for trade in.
Next few months of XH2 testing will tell.

Geoff, Congrats with that gem of a cam so ,is the auto-focus on the D5 everything its cracked up to be, does it have XQD or CF express..inquiring mind wants to know

The AF is brilliant but I haven't tried it with anything longer than the 24-70 yet.
Dual XQD, the Dual CF models are relatively rare any way but having XQD cards I didn't see the point in getting a CF one.

Looking forward to hearing how you get on with the XH2 & XH2S.
40mp seems a lot for an APC-S sensor. I could imagine, noise will be a bigger issue than the XH2S sensor at 26mp.
