I recently lost the cap of the vertical multi selector (called a sun-selector in some places). This is a small rubber part a bit smaller than a Canadian 5c piece and about 5mm high. I replicated the main multi-selector but sits in a place suitable for the thumb when shooting in portrait mode. There is a second one for landscape mode.
I discovered that this is not an uncommon fault with the D4, I wish I had found out earlier I might have bought a couple of spares. Nikon, for some reason, won't sell the part except as part of a repair. I would like to hope that this is because they supply a modified part that doesn't come out so easily. A Nikon repair cost, apparently, around C$400 in 2013 so something over £200.
A quick search of Amazon found several suppliers of the part at a price of £6.99 including shipping (from Hong Kong). The part isn't particularly difficult to fit, I refitted the original in a churchyard in Suffolk with the aid of a small screwdriver. The new one took slightly more effort but once fitted the selector works perfectly, so I assume it is fitted correctly.
I understand that the D4s, D5 and D500 have a different cap that is harder and, as I haven't found any references to them falling off, harder to dislodge. I'll be happy to provide a link if anyone wants it.

A photo might be easier for us to identify exactly what you need, Geoff.

Anyone who has a D4 will know what I am talking about. Anyone who doesn't have a D4 won't be terribly interested in accessing the spare part. The D4s, D5 and D500 have a different design of cap which, apparently, resolves the problem.
