I'm considering a camera that is lightish but can be used as a carry round when out for the day with Kay but still gives me the reach for the odd wildlife shot. I would love the Sony RX10iv but cant afford or justify it so I am looking at the Sony HX400v What do people think and is there anything else around that price that you might suggest?

Well I use a D3300 with a 18-105 as the knockabout 'family' camera, retains compatibility with all my (modern) lenses and does the job well.

I can see how that would be light but 105mm is not enough for wildlife I might encounter.

Agreed, but we are back to the age old problem of wide or long, you can't get both AND good IQ, unless you swap lenses, which ceases to be handy.. My 70-300 is pretty good but hardly wide on DX for 'normal' shots. It is pocketable though, just.

Jan uses this and the quality is super. I seriously considered getting one as well. Even does photo stacking.

I sugges that a bridge camera is what you want Nikon do a good one Coolpix P900. The Panasonic FZ2000 is also very good.
