| this really only concerns u.k based togs ,we all tend to sell our unwanted gear from time to time and i did that the other day selling a medium sized shoulder bag on e/bay . no problem there sold and i charged the seller what i thought was a reasonable £5 p&p ,the trouble started when i got to the post office counter and found they have upped there prices through the roof ,the parcel which weighed under 1kg would have cost just under £10 to post and there is no longer a cheaper alternative i.e parcel post or 2nd class etc .this applies right across the board apparently on anything larger than letter size .i its cheaper to post something to elsewhere in the world than to your next town . my solution was to sign up to collect plus couriers and then drop the same parcel into my local paper shop (next door to the p.o) and it gets picked up from there total cost with a tracking number and insured £3.99 . so be aware if you sell anything or post anything .

| I read about this the other day, it depends on volume as well as weight now, was what I remember, so bulky items can be more expensive than heavy ones. What bugs me is eBays insistence that you must send some stuff for free??? That includes computer components, or did? I broke a computer for somebody once and the cost of sending some of the parts was prohibitive, they ended up in the skip. How anybody can sell stuff at the price they do like CD's an things, and not charge postage I really don't know. One of the many reasons I avoid eBay and their 'policies' like the plague.

| Well the answer as Jeff has found is to use these smaller couriers. There is also a very good verion that works for all over the world and they provide door to door service. http://www.parcel2go.com In a changing world where letters are a rarity as email can do everything a letter can I do wonder why people still use letters for everything except court summons and other legal communications that need to be signed for.

| I have been restricted by to a monthly selling limit for a year now because of a bad rating ( not feedback ...thats100%) . It's this star rating system that buyers are encouraged to score you on. Guess what ...I was marked down on postage charges. 2 greedy woman having won small heavy yet fragile items for a fraction of their retail value were aggrieved I charged the going rate for protecting their purchases in the post. I argued with eBay, to no avail that, in the UK it's impossible to get people to give sellers 5 stars for postage charges...because even when done at cost, buyers still think the seller is the villain...not Royal Mail. Buyers also think postage is "a stamp" ...when its packaging materials and time to organise it all as well. I now put a statement on the bottom of every auction stating that people shouldn't bother bidding if they think the postage is ott. It's clear royal mail don't want to be bothered with the traditional part of their business...general public and general mail. They just want lucrative commercial work. The government should never have privatised the mail...or water....or power. >:( I haven't quite got my head round the new parcel sizing. I took a parcel down today and though it wouldn't go through their slot thingie ...it still went 1st class post for £5.20????

Can't make omelettes without breaking eggs. Sadly today's politicians haven't got the b*lls to make hard decisions...when they are needed. What's obvious to the man in the street is avoided like the plague by todays politicians. Hence what we see with this UKIP vote. Of course...they would be no different if, God Forbid, they ever got the chance in a position of power.

Britain today is an ugly and intimidating place compared with the one in which I grew up, and she was the architect of that change. Wilfully carried out without an ounce of compassion or concern for the communities she destroyed and the people whose lives she blighted forever, describing them as "the enemy within". Great swathes of Britain's industrial heritage were laid waste, some never to recover. Across much of Britain the hatred and loathing remain, undimmed after 30 years. Martin.

Whilst I have great admiration for the way she handled the situation in the Falklands at the time there is still a question regarding the events before and whether if they had been handled better the whole situation might have been avoided. I think her handling of the UK industrial situation was as Martin says completely without any form of compassion or concern for the events that woudl follow the 'crushing of the unions'. Today's situation is partially down to her and the legislation that she brought in which effectively destroyed the British engineering and creative inventiveness with machinery and electronics. It is actually recovering to a degree now but it is long way off where it could be. For me the jury is out on the degree and amount of damage done but it is considerable some was by her and the rest was self-inflicted by the unions not knowing which battles to fight!

| Before we get completely off subject - anyone complaining about post should try having an Inverness postcode... Next day delivery by Parcelforce = 7-10 days, of which it will spend at least 5 of those days sitting in the offices at Aberdeen. Special Delivery does arrive the next day but the earlier delivery 9am is not available. Most couriers won't delivery next day here anymore and I have actually stopped using a number of photographic supplies companies because they insist on Parcel Force or similiar. I can get an item fully insured, tracked, and delivered in 3 days from the USA via UPS. But I can't get anything delivered from Glasgow even in under 4 days.

| These independent courier are the future. The PO in UK is still thinking people send letters and it is their business to deliver. In reality letter post is either bills that should be downloaded and/or printed as required. Parcels should be it business and it should be competeing head on with the small players and able to undercut them.

| Had to update this after an experience on Friday. I wanted to order a new Peak Design Leash, the new version. I found that Camera World had them in stock at £34.95 plus P&P. I put in my postcode, was told I was a special delivery Highlands and Islands, told it would be 3-4 days not next day, and £14.99 to deliver. I cancelled the order and sent them an email to tell them what I thought of this excessive charge. As usual they blamed their courier DPD. Which, as I pointed out to them was odd, since DPD delivered to me last week for £4.99...they had no answer to that. I ended up ordering it from FotoSense with £3.99 Royal Mail first class delivery, or free postage if I was happy to wait 3-5 days. I should also point out that Park Camera's would have delivered it without any additional location related charges but won't have them in stock until Thursday and I wanted it before then if possible.

| Fortunate to have a shop in our village that also runs a parcel business. Send lots to Germany where our son lives and the local chap is half Royal Mail cost. he even packs as well. Sadly talking of retiring.
