To Facebook or not to Facebook. That is the question?  Rate Topic

A thought to put to everyone on the forum.

Facebook seems to be a cheap and easy way to share stuff.
It isnt as structured as the forum but it is free.
The FB group would be a closed group so until you were a member you couldnt post. This gets rid of the spammer problem.

So here is is the question should we have a Facebook group?
Should it be as well as or instead of the forum?

Please can you state your preference.

There already is a nikon group on Facebook.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/Nikon.Asylum

You must join to post, and it is better than a lot of other open groups, as anyone can post and often the posts are of poor quality.

Not having joined Facebook, Twitter or any other Social Networking site I am not qualified to comment on the merit of such a move. Except perhaps so say that my abstinence from those sort of 'bare your navel to the world' sites will continue.

An amusing thought......

"Presently, I am trying to make friends outside of Facebook while applying the same principles.

Therefore, every day, I go down on the street and tell the passerby what I have eaten, how I feel, what I have done the night before, what I will do tonight and the rest of the week.

I give them pictures of my wife, my daughter, my dog, me gardening and spending time in my pool. I also listen to their conversations and I tell them I love them.

. . . . . and it works!!!

I already have 3 persons Following me ....2 police officers and a psychiatrist"

I will be across in UK in October and if necessary will bail you out or start proceedings to get you released from your Sectioning Notice.

re: my abstinence from those
I agree with Eric (to some degree, grin).
I acknowledge the spam problems this site has had in the past.
Independence is another matter (highly appreciated by myself).
Regards, Gilbert

I can understand the desire to have a less burdensome technical structure.

I can also understand why some people use crack cocaine. I'm much more likely to try crack than Facebook, however. Yes, I know they have 1.5 billion users and I'm in danger of missing everything in the world (including spam, identity theft, malware and any possible privacy...oh yeah and a zillion unwanted wonderfully personalized ads).

In short. I love the community of Nikon D1 users :-), fuji x users...and that is just about it.

If you do enter Facebook, I would request that my name, forum posts and images be removed first.

Yikes...

Tom

Hi Tom, no compulsion just an alternative thought about getting more people involved.
I hate using FB as it is very unstructured but if it allows people to show their pictures more easily then it has some advantage.

This is currently only a back burner idea but unless we get a huge positive request it wont happen.

Looks like there will be no FB from the feedback so far.
I havent heard from Robert but I know he isnt a fan.

It was just an idea but seems like not a good one. I personally would always prefer both a website and FB if it was to occur.
The layout and searching in FB is dire!

I'd go with both. I set up a Wordpress site for my ex wife that automatically posted to her Facebook business page, might work if you could do similar.

Lol at all the resistance to facebook! Yes, there is a lot of crap posted there but there doesn´t have to be. I am a member of a few closed photography groups on facebook and they are good with serious, helpful discussion and good feedback on images from other members. Facebook can be very good - you just have to know how to avoid the rubbish.

I'm on Nikon Asylum, which has 538 members.

It's good for a daily dose of Nikon, but since there are no threads, hard to follow a topic.

There doesn't appear to be a search for topics within the group so the same questions keep reappearing.

:whip: Turn my back for nine months and look what you get up to!!!!

I love Eric's little tale! Can we have a 'Like' button? Much the same view as mine. My ex wife spent well over an hour, one day showing me all the benefits of FB???

I didn't see one thing which I 'Liked' but many that I 'Disliked'.

To my mind our little gathering are fine where we are, I find the posting of images somewhat irksome, which is a big downside for a photography site but it's not the end of the world and if you use a site like Flicker or FotoBucket then it isn't that hard to get around.

Not that I am really entitled to comment... being more absent than usual.

As for the choices, for me the site only, I will never willingly visit FaceBook and I can see no point whatsoever in duplicating a presence here and on FB. One or the other would wither, probably the site. Which suggests the FB idea might increase our activity and probably attract more members but I don't think that would sit well with some of the more low key members here, I am sure we have a quiet but faithful following who lurk in the shadows and are under exposed.

o.O

Keep up the good work everyone! I will look in more often from now on. ;-)

BTW I finished the car in July, it's now on the road officially. Draws a lot of attention wherever I go. Still a lot of finishing tasks to do but that will keep until the spring.

The car as I bought it in July 2013 It's a Marlin with a Rover V8 3500cc engine, weighs 700Kg or thereabouts.

This one was just before it's roadworthiness test in July 2015. I made all the aluminium bits and the stainless steel grill.

Nice car Robert. I hope to be over in the next month or so. I dont know if we can arrange a meet.
Same place as last time might be favourite.

Sounds good to me, I need a break! Weather permitting, autumn colours look better in sunshine!!!

Won't be in the Marlin though, it's being laid up at the end of September, although it goes very well, I'm not sure I would trust it on a longer trip, least not yet.

It's curious, when an obituary is posted on FB how many people hit the "Like" button.

It is because FB is a poorly designed and developed application!
There is no Dislike or other Emoticons.

OK I have been following what is happening on this thread.

Looks like the general consensus is that it is either no FB or a both website and FB option is the preferred option. Since I dont intend to extend my time doing moderation I think that the FB option doesnt really seem to be wanted so we will persist with just the website.

Thanks to those who voted and contacted me.

I think 'Like' has become more of an acknowledgement - kind of 'Thankyou for posting' or 'I empathise' rather than I like this.
