Desk top, monitor, printer, speakers, Ooma, Cable modem I need some advice on buying a UPS. I have everything on a surge protector but keep loosing power about once a week, for just a few minutes. I have already lost a monitor to this. Can I plug mu surge strip in to a UPS? Jonathon, if I am using the wrong categories feel free to move me. |

Most of the UPS units already have surge protection built in but if you need the power bar it won't hurt as most surge protectors are just capasitators that soak up current pulses. Make sure that you buy a large enough unit to handle the load of all your stuff for at least longer than your average blackouts. It should also have an easly replaceable battery as they tend to go every few years but the basic unit can often last over 10 years. |

I have run via a UPS for at least the last ten years after various issues related to spikes and brown outs. Wouldn't dream of being without one now. I believe the APC to be among the best. That's what I have. They have a calculator to work out the optimum spec for your needs. http://www.apc.com/tools/ups_selector/ I have a UPS-650 for Michaels desktop and a Back-UPS RS 1500 which was for my old massive liquid cooled tower Mac G5. I run everything through it to cover surges and spikes. It's surprising how often it cuts in even though the mains appears to be OK. |
