I let the speculation and debate start.

Personally I dont think it is the D400 but more of a Nikon FA-Digital.

They heard about your Fuji retro leanings, Jonathan.;-)

Won't be D400 as they say its an FX camera.

There has been so much on-line speculation about a D400 that I think if one is ever released, almost no-one will be satisfied with with the camera ;~)

I agree it will be so long awaited it will be anti-climactic.

Apparently this rumoured camera will be a Nikon DF.

DF = ? Digital Film ?

The camera info is due for release in November probably 6th Nov.
DF actually stands for Digital Fusion... apparently.  Whatever that is.

Dont know but at a guess I think that the camera will be a Nikon FA with a digital equivalent insert and a TFT on the back that allows use of MF or AF lenses.

The bit I dont understand is that to allow for good manual focus you need to have a split image or fresnel or microprism screen but really focussing could be by EVF or eye.  Which then begs the question what happens to the pentaprism and mirror ?  Removed I guess.
If that is the case then we have a 'game changer' or paradigm shift camera.
The next D5 (FX) and D500 (DX) will be without a pentaprism and mirror.

Interesting times ahead.

Look forward to the announcement it sounds like the sort of camera I would like, although I expect it will beyond my budget.

My dream is a simple good quality body taking Nikkor F lenses with a standard 24 X 36 mm sensor (FX). I just want to take photographs, not engage in a technical battle with the tools. The current trend with the DSLR's of today seems to be to packing ever more 'features' into the menues.

From that point of view I mourn the passing of film, what I love is the flexibility and immediacy of digital and the opportunity it presents for storage, processing and sharing.

A good simple body would be great!

I agree........but we may have to settle for a camera.

Seriously....you are right. When I had the EOS1 (film) I also bought the 620 EF-M and the RT. The latter had a pellicle mirror, a 45deg fixed mirror, that enabled you to see the subject during exposure...and of course it was quiet and instant, with no mirror movement. I am surprised the modern EVF cameras didn't adapt this idea....it's only drawback was reduced viewfinder illumination and slight under exposure ....due to exposure being through the pellicle mirror.

But the EFM was M for manual. The whole camera was a stripped down eos model requiring the user to take control without all the auto this and that.

I had great fun with both models. But in truth, sometimes the extra ATD that the M model required DID prevent getting some shots.

Maybe it's my style of photography, or laziness, but I tended to use the body that gave me Av exposure. It just took something out of the equation.

Similarly, I find with the Fuji ( which I think you would enjoy using by the way) I still let the electronics nail down Av ....despite having full manual readily available.

Pfft!!! I saw the subject heading and got excited for a milisecond. Sigh... I'll be moving to Canon at this rate. I want a D400!! :'(

My understanding is Canon don't have a D400 (equivalent) either Judith. o.O

I blame Ray for the lack of a D400.

Not only has he stopped posting but I suspect stopped buying cameras.

He was always the benchmark for Nikon. They waited for him to buy before launching new models. Nikon are now without a reference point.

Heyho!

o.O

Prices of the D300S are so good now it's not a daft idea to consider one.

I think Ray has moved over to his other love... Radio.

Ray is fine, I had an exchange of eMails last week with him, he has been busy with 'Honey do' jobs as he put it!

He has been enjoying his motorbikes and HAM radio but he is having some problems with his truck.

Your right Robert, the Canon crowd are waiting for a 7dmk2.

As I've said else where I think Canon and Nikon are waiting for each other to make a move.

I'm not sure what they think the big deal is with a D400/Canon equivalent. It's just an upgrade on the D300s not the flagship Nikon camera!! *rolls eyes*

Posted by jk: Sun Oct 27th, 2013 17:49 22nd Post
There is a 20MP Canon called a 70D and a 24MP Nikon called a D7100 or D5300.
What we are asking for in the D400 is a higher quality of build but in reality is the D7100 or 70D good enough. Certainly compared to a D1X or D2X these cameras cost 1/2 the price and are streets better!

Are we being 'greedy' ?

Hmm the lenses being shown on this new camera are all/almost all MF lenses. No problem for me.
But that implies a non-AF camera which again wouldnt worry me overly.
But then again the latest image shows the 50mm f1.8 AFS.

If it is FM sized and digital with a good split image focusing screen then it would be interesting. I got a split image screen for my D3 but it made the viewfinder very dim compared to the standard screen.

Do I need another camera?  No.

OMG ... it is smaller than a D600 and FX format.
If it has 16MP then what will it do to sales of the D610 that has 24MP.
16MP to 24MP is very similar but 24MP gives you a little more crop space!.

Wonder why so small and with a mirror?

Need a bit of convincing that this is a direction I should consider.

Seeing the size comparison this camera really is Nikon FA like. It has the same angularity but looking at the video it has all the features of the current digital camera except there is no flash and to date I have not seen the LCD on the back.
Fuji has shown how slim a EVF camera can be in DX size but this new Nikon is FX so it is larger by definition. The size comparison with the Sony A7 (also FX) shows a smaller size in the Sony. The Sony A7 is EVF so that is really the indicator that the Nikon is probably more conventional but with a mirror. However they might just be delivering the same package as the A7 but in a retro body. The sound of the mirror might just be a digitised shutter sound!

I think the Nikon DF will hurt Sony A7 sales as it shows up with a huge range of lenses it can use whilst the Sony is struggling with their poor lens range.

If the Nikon DF is a success then it is easy to just up the megapixels from 16 to 24 or 36 or whatever.

November 5th is the information release date. Some fireworks display!.

Well the info is out.
For me I like idea of dials rather than LCD menus but the cost of the camera is too high and there is no split image viewfinder screen to allow better use of my old MF lenses.

It costs a lot more to make a camera with dials than menus. A lot of serious commenters about the camera were disappointed that it didn't have a split image viewfinder option.

Wonder if it will be possible to have an after market one installed or if it would interfere with the auto focus.o.O

As I read it the viewing screen is nailed in, although it may be possible to get it swapped by a competent company?

Katzeye were the people, I don't know if they are still trading.

I would have felt a lot more positive about the Df if it had been introduced with the splitscreen viewfinder.

Maybe it is also the fact that for me 16MP is not a significant jump from the 12MP in my D3 and D3S. The D600 is great. I just did a quick shot of a moth this evening. Wow what sharpness and detail.

Since I don't have any significant amount of old glass the Df really doesn't have anything to offer, except style, that my D600 has.
