The expected update to the lens range has happened.
http://nikonrumors.com/2012/10/24/nikkor-70-200mm-f4g-ed-vr-lens-available-for-pre-order.aspx/

This will be a much smaller and lighter lens than the 70-200 f2.8 AFS VR.
I can see this lens selling well as it makes for an ideal travel lens.

The other new lens (24-85 f3.5-4.5 AFS VR) that came out with the D600 teamed up with this will make for a great travel combo.  Shame the 24-85 is not a f4 lens over the whole range.

looks a good lens its got to come in substantially lower than the 2.8 price wise to have any effect though .i'll wait till my favourite grey importer gets one at a proper price though

Gotta say a lot more than 5x on VR to get me interested in moving from 2.8 to 4.

The only interesting thing I saw is that they sell the tripod collar separately so the "lens price" will be lower...questionable at best...

Price for f4 version is $1400 versus f2.8 version of $2400. I have no idea of UK pricing.

Agree with Tom that $180 for a tripod collar doesnt look very useful.

WEX are quoting a pre-delivery price of £1172 -00 but no price yet quoted for the tripod mount ,as this does not fall far below the price of a grey import 2.8 lens its got to be a sit back and wait job .

Well, given that some of Nikon's tripod collars have been less than totally capable (80-400 being a case in point) the good news is that you don't have to pay for a collar that you'll just throw away when replacing it with the inevitable and much higher quality RRS collar.

That said, the only valuable part of this lens is that it's smaller/lighter than the 2.8 version. Yeah, it has improved VR but since it's slower, it probably will need it. Of course, it's cheaper, but I'm not sure cheap enough, quite honestly.

Smaller, lighter, cheaper coupled with the high ISO capabilities nowadays can be very appealing to some maker sectors. I can't cope with heavy kit anymore so quality f4 suits me now.

You and me both Bob, but Nikon has thrown the baby out with the bath water again. You wait for years for a 70-200 f4 to match Canon then when they bring it out you have to pay extra for a tripod coller that comes standard with the Canon ones.

Come on Nikon get you act in gear.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Canon 70-200 f4 comes with NO tripod collar

It's about time Nikon caught up to Canon in this area (the big C have/had a couple of lenses that produce fantastic images with great performance and less cost and weight - this was one of them, the 17-40 f4 is another)

I imagine street price will be on par with the Canon equivalent

It would seem you are right Doug, that's changed as when I got mine a few years ago it came with tripod collar.

Maybe a case of cutting corners to save money, or make more profit .

I don't remember the current version of the Canon 70-200 f4 ever including the collar

I'm not sure the tripod collar being omitted is a bad thing - in my experience, the vast majority of owners of the f2.8 Canon or Nikon just swivel the foot out of the way most of the time.
With the f4 being much more suited to hand held use (due to the lighter weight) I imagine a large number of owners never needing it, yet never removing it)
