Looks like what we call a Mason wasp from what I can see. Need a side view of the body to be able to confirm. If it is then it builds a 'nest' from mud usually on walls or in the joint between wall and roof. Does it look like this ?

Thanks JK, I think you nailed it. The legs were very orange but the body black, have looked at Google Images and there seem to be a wide range of colour combinations, possibly related to maturity of the specimen? It was dumped in the bin so I can't offer a side view...
