A friend of mine bought a smaller version hexacopter with a GPS and mounted a GoPro camera on it. You could fly it out of sight and shut off the control box and it would return and land within a meter of it's takeoff spot. There was no live view so all shots or video are on the fly but the camera is quite sharp and has a very wide angle lens and by hovering and rotating the copter good coverage could be obtained. Small copters don't require a licence yet and this type of setup costs about $2000. This is an arial of Waterloo Ontario grabbed from a video frame.
