That may be true to some extent, but Nikon were sure caught out with the high ISO noise issue around the d2X time, when droves left for Canon. It took them 18months to stem the flow, with the D3. Having said that, they clearly went 'over the top' of their phased release strategy, with the launch of the D3 series. We had a long honeymoon period with that and the D300 heading the field.
