After the download, stop the installation, by telling the dialogue not to install, then go look in the Updates folder in the main library. there will be a folder there with a number with the last modified date of just now, That was your update download. Copy that fold to a safe place, either another drive or a USB stick and un mount it or remove it. then go back to software update and resume the update. The update file in the update folder will be nuked when it has completed the update. I have added a screenshot of the folder with a recent update in it. Note the path at the bottom of the window. You simply double click on the main package to initiate an update/install. What really annoys me is the update being downloaded without my consent. I was watching my network monitor the other day and noticed it going haywire, in fact it was the update in that folder below, it downloaded all by itself. When I got notification it was ready to install. Fortunately I saved the update to another drive before I did the actual installation.
