Thing about large companies is that they tend to move a lot overseas where they can get the work done cheaper (China, Bangladesh) whereas a smaller company will more likely use local suppliers/contacts. In the years that I worked at BT Consulting I worked with staff from all around the globe but principally from India and China where we could get cheap programmers. These staff were excellent IF given the right direction but they had little understanding of the solutions they were coding and how they would be used.

Ethically I see no reason in the modern world why a person should not subcontract their work as long as they are responsible for its successful delivery. However putting a large company managers hat on this would be a real slap in the face as it implies that the company was mismanaging its staff. It is all about perspectives!
