Interesting that you had a similar experience with the D300.
It wasnt an IQ thing exactly nor handling but I never seemed to be able to get the hi ISO performance I wanted (only 1 stop difference but 1600 compared to 3200ISO) from the D300 compared to the D700 so I was always compromising.
In sunny conditions no problem!
I suspect the problem was it was always going to be compared to the D3 and D700 (especially with the latter's body similarity). Had it been launched on its own, like the D7000, we would have been less hypercritical.
For me it was perfectly noise free in daylight up to 2000...which when viewed from a 'film days' perspective is quite remarkable. And one perhaps should say ...'that's more than good enough'. But for indoor and specialist shooting it might not be.
At the time I did say that it probably would be the last pro DX body for sometime (if ever!), and current trends seem to confim that.
But then, what makes a 'pro' body these days?
For me its the speed of response, particularly focusing. I am not to bothered about robust titanium (or whatever) bodies as I dont mistreat mine like press pool bodies use to be.
If they were to just speed up the D7000 responsivness I bet the D7X00 would fulfill most pro DX needs.
