It is not a DX thing as I get very good results from my X100, XPro1, D1X and D70.


I think it WAS a DX thing.
The D300 was a step up from the D2X, but the D3/D700 was a double step up ...due to the FX sensor. The D300 always was inferior to the other two, but it's magnification effect diminished the impact.

I don't disagree with your observation. I sold my D300 because of this.
The problem is that the D7000 ( the next best DX camera ) isn't as fast at focusing as the D300.
