Too much electronics in modern cars! ....oh yes. As far as the engine is concerned it's the emissions regs forcing it, however the big con trick here is in the secret fact that it's actually the motor manufacturers themselves driving the emissions lobby. BMW are big culprits. Incidentally we have to have CATs because.......Johnson Matthey make catalytic converters, and also happen to have monopoly on the world's platinum. This is one reason why I love my MX5....OBD1 diagnostics (don't need a fancy gizmo), simple fuelling and ignition, and.....guess what it just sailed through an MOT without a catalytic converter, tester said he's never seen a petrol vehicle with such low emission. Despite the fact that I have a few mods and get about 180 BHP. Soon as they went to ODB2 and deliberately flawed cooling systems it all just went crap from there. To my mind, mine and especially Robert's cars are better vehicles in service when it comes down to it than say a beemer, merc, mitsu or Lexus where you can't do nothing without the dealer only software trickery.
