Not sure if the gap is a design flaw, or a feature intended to make sensor cleaning easier.

Yes a number of dust spots show up at the upper left portion at f/16 but the extent is more or less the same as the D3 when it was new. Not sure if the gap is a design flaw, or a feature intended to make sensor cleaning easier.
