I would say the camera is better built than the D7000 but not as well specified. I think from results I have seen that the D300 is not so good as the D7000 but improves on D200 if you want better high ISO performance.
If you have the high end accessories for Nikons that use the 10pin connector then the D300 scores over the D7000 that lacks these features.
