It's strange that they are the only ones doing it since it allows them to drive the price downwards (30%+ of the price at retail is profit for that retailer, then a portion is for the wholesaler and presumably there should be some profit for Apple too)
Despite this, Apple have managed to drive the price down for physical media and smash the price for downloaded versions
It should be possible to get a Lion Upgrade (Snow Leopard Required) from any Apple store
As of Mountain Lion things might change again, but I wouldn't be surprised (after a delay) to see Mountain Lion on USB too
