They work for small light cameras or flashes but I'd hesitate to put a DSLR on one.
You can get ones beefed up for DSLRs but I have never had the need to try one.
I use the gorilla pods for flash guns that I clamp to a bit of furniture (out of shot) to get lighting into corners etc.
