I think the adapter is useful for people with two different makes of camera bodies.  It really irks me having to have duplicate lenses for my Nikon and Fuji systems.  However the cameras provide very different functionality so I just have to live with it.

If you go back to Fuji system then if you can live without a viewfinder (I cant).  Try the XM5.  Otherwise the XT5 or XT50 (40MP) are very like our Nikon DSLRs except smaller and lighter with many more pixels but the XS20 (26MP) is very fine as well but has the PASM dial and the C1-C4 (customised saved user settings) which is good if you want birding, macro, general, etc settings at the turn of a dial.   Always suggest hands on trial is best!
