Not limited to the UK by any means. There were some classes I missed at University which taught one how to turn sharpening a pencil into a 30 year career in the US. Often wondered how they could accept a pay check.
I wondered why I kept coming across people sharpening pencils in Philly especially when we all worked with computers in a paperless office.
Some people have no shame or sense of pride in their personal contribution.
I find it very sad that people can be so detached from life to think that it is just about what they can get out.
