Bob in years gone by they used even larger rowing boats like this for trading all over the Mediterranean.This was in the Naval Museum next to our hotel. There was a model of a much larger one like this with at least 30 slaves each side with a central gangway for the nice man with a whip to alter the speed of the boat, very high tec!
