Necessity being the mother of invention, something will come along.Well actually, Horse, Steam, Diesel, Petrol. The first Diesel type engine was invented in 1802 but the Otto cycle (4 stroke cycle) wasn't introduced until 1861. The dates at which each was adopted into a road vehicle may, of course be different.
A lot of very clever things came from the original space exploration projects.
The first cars were horse, then steam, which gave way to petrol and eventually diesel.
Perhaps we go back to horse!
