Was sure I mentioned this some time back? With a TC 1.4 (or on DX) it will be a big help for birders, the 300 is simply too short even with a TC, also loosing a stop is unwelcome. So 500 X 1.5 for DX takes us to 750mm equivalent at f/5.6 which isn't bad compared with an f/4 FL, which many people find too cumbersome/risky to take out in the field, even if they own said lens and where else can you use a 500mm lens?. Also the light, compact design and latest VR should ensure a nice lens. I can see birding coming more popular. It's a pleasant way to spend a day in the wild, provided the entry fee isn't like >£10,000 plus camera. Significantly less than half that price, weight and size while maintaining IQ to a good level will attract many who simply can't , or won't invest the price of a car in a single lens. Looking forward to more flesh on the bones rather than speculation about the spec and price. I think the 300 PF was simply testing the water and developing experience for Nikon. I hope they can build on it.
