As an unexpected bonus I spotted a Red Kite (Milvus milvus) soaring above the hill climb course at Harewood, close to the famous Harewood House tourist attraction. I have read that the wingspan of an adult Red Kite is up to 2 Metres. The bird systematically covered much of the area of the course and I caught it just within range of the Nikon D300s with the Nikkor 80-200 attached. If I had taken my tripod I would have used the 300mm f2.8. Cropped to the maximum and processed in Lightroom, supplemented with 'detail extractor' in the Nik filter collection which seems very good at extracting detail without adding a pale border around the subject boundaries because you can apply it in small zones, rather than to the entire image, that makes it very controllable. I am amazed at the clarity even the pupils are clearly defined, the range must have been at least 100 yards, the bird was quite high too. 1/100 Sec @ f5.6, ISO 200
