It's only useful on any lens handheld at slow shutter speeds.
Exactly and with a long lens and slow shutter speeds in low light there is a loss of quality.
The other thing is that while it is well documented that VR should be switched off for tripod use. The fact you should also disable it for shutter speeds faster than 1/500 is NOT!
